Thanks to science, another spanish flu style catastrophe as in 1918 was prevented.
"The mRNA vaccines prevented millions of deaths. The technology for building new, effective vaccines quickly came on in leaps and bounds. Masks worked. And as with every pandemic in recent history, subsequent reviews have found that the advice to go early and hard with containment was correct."

*DARK MAGA* If you're a little confused about what Musk is trying to achieve with DOGE, here's the breakdown: Elon Musk and Peter Thiel cofounded a company… | 340 comments on LinkedInJon Sneider (www.linkedin.com)
The article has some useful context about Musk's career, notably what a sleazeball he has always been in his business and public dealings. It also points up the way governments have refused to do their regulatory jobs – and, less explicitly, how journalism has been a lapdog along the way.
But as it accurately points out Musk's desperate efforts to slow or reverse the well-deserved slide at Tesla, it doesn't get into the truly scary stuff. Namely, Musk won't give a damn about Tesla or its shareholders if his coup (per the first piece in this newsletter) succeeds. If he can divert U.S. government spending even more (see: SpaceX) into his bank accounts, Tesla will be an afterthought. Everything we know about this guy says there are no boundaries on his lust for money, and power. - @dangillmor

“Wait, not like that”: Free and open access in the age of generative AI
The real threat isn’t AI using open knowledge — it’s AI companies killing the projects that make knowledge freeMolly White (Citation Needed)
Instead of worrying about “wait, not like that”, I think we need to reframe the conversation to “wait, not only like that” or “wait, not in ways that threaten open access itself”.
Anyone at an AI company who stops to think for half a second should be able to recognize they have a vampiric relationship with the commons. By operating in this purely extractive way, they destroy the things that underpin their businesses.

The abysmally low book sales for Utown in English has motivated me to give the webcomic a new push. If Oni won't promote the book on their end, I can still get people to read what I consider to be a very, very good story--for free, as a French and English webcomic.
Utown has a dedicated website that looks awesome and I would love if you checked it out. I did a massive update this week 😀
Thank you for writing that story! I think I still owe you an update:
- the printed book reached London after I had completed reading it online (shipping was perfect… I just could not stop reading!)
- after just a few days it ended up in my bag and flew to Italy
- two days ago it was passed to a dear friend (see attached documentation 😜)

Climate litigation - Environmental groups sound new alarm as fossil fuel lobby pushes for immunity theguardian.com/us-news/2025/m…
Nearly 200 groups urge Congress to reject fossil fuel industry immunity efforts, fearing long-term damage to climate lawsuits
“Lawmakers must decisively reject any attempt by the fossil fuel industry to evade accountability and ensure both justice today and the right of future generations to hold polluters responsible for decades of deception,” said the missive, which is addressed to the House minority leader, Hakeem Jeffries, and Senate minority leader, Chuck Schumer.
Fossil fuel companies have vied for such a get-out-of-jail-free card for years.
