Three Countries Formerly Known as Allies Reconsidering F-35 Purchases - emptywheel.net/2025/03/15/thre… "#Trump has started destroying America’s best export: military toys."
in reply to Glyn Moody

I'd be worried too as one needs maintenance, parts, software updates etc and Trump has zero allegiance to his friends or long time allies...

I created a crib sheet for the #Helix text editor:

bobulous.org.uk/coding/Helix-c…

As usual I intended the new page to be compact and concise; and as usual it ended up being huge and rambling. Hopefully it'll still be of use to people who aren't fully familiar with the most useful keys and commands. (And just maybe of vague interest to #Neovim users who are thinking about trying Helix.)

Let me know if you spot anything incorrect.

mmmhm... I've been working on a new layout for the 0x33.board that moves all components to the *front* of the board for single-sided assembly and while first I didn't think it would be possible it seems to work out very well actually...

EXCEPT

the USB-C connector can't be in the litte corner spot without colliding with the key... what do I do? 😭😭

in reply to s-ol

taking the chance to re-implement the whole CAD file in #build123d instead of cadquery (build123d.readthedocs.io/). It's quite some effort but coming out a lot more readable, which means more editable, which is what I need right now as I tweak it and experiment with things like a possible "fully closed shell" design.

Thanks again @alderwick for the suggestion on how to solve the design dilemma! I haven't cut the USB-hole yet as you can see, but the spot is reserved ;)

If anyone's interested here is the graph for CPU temperature when my new #OPNsense N100 router was running in the homelab cabinet rack vs when I just put a simple USB desk fan beside it to blow out the heat. A roughly 15C drop so the results will be much better hopefully when I get the proper cooling fans for the cabinet. PS The drop to zero is where I powered it off whilst tidying some other cables near by.

yea I landed at the same conclusion unfortunately. "Fanless" was questionable, I didn't measure the difference but nine went from quite uncomfortable to touch to barely warm to touch.
in reply to Ariel

Yes mine was uncomfortable to touch too and is now much cooler and will be even better when I have the correct fans installed.

Utterly unconscionable – though hardly surprising – for the New York Times to print such vile fabrications, completely untethered from empirical reality, and to keep platforming a man who would spread such extremist propaganda as one of their most prominent columnists.

Arctic defence: The Canadian military is training for potential conflicts in the North. Here's what that looks like in Eeyou Istchee

Teacher in Idaho told she must remove sign saying "Everyone is welcome here" because it had images of hands with a variety of "skin tones."

School officials said "that it was not the message that was at issue, but rather the hands of different skin tones on the poster."

Sadly, we need to know about things like this so that we can oppose them & keep them from growing & reenforcing each other.

I offered up some options, and wife and kids decided they wanted burgers for lunch. I made this plan this morning when the forecast said it was going to stop raining at noon.

Right about the time I went outside to start up the griddle, the wind picked up and it started snowing.

Too late to stop. I was out so long and I burned my finger but I don’t know which finger is burned and which fingers are just cold.

New long blog, The Covid pandemic, 5 years on (1/6)

Five years ago, COVID-19 was declared a pandemic. For millions, it was literally a defining event of their lives: It killed them. It indisputedly killed at least 7,000,000 people. That’s covid deaths reported to the World Health Organization. The actual number is far higher, and the ongoing impact of the pandemic is also tremendous. Two meaningful parts of that impact are continuing excess mortality, and impact on children, especially how they’re doing educationally. (For example, see Nation’s test scores fall.)

Making sure I don’t need to order glazing or backer board #woodworking
in reply to frew

You want to get acid free rag board to mount the piece onto otherwise it will discolor over time. Mount it with acid free double stick tape, again to prevent discoloration.

Glazing is a nice to have to protect from dust and grime. If you're going with glazing, consider glass with a UV film or UV plexi (expensive!)

in reply to satterle

@satterle yeah my wife works at a museum (Getty) and we’ve discussed in some depth. Glazing is surprisingly expensive!
in reply to frew

If you don't have a precise radial arm saw, I've gotten good results from building a sled for my table saw. I then carefully measure a 45 degree angle and screw a long board (12"-18") along the line I've drawn to make a nearly perfect 45 degree angle.
in reply to Tito Swineflu

@tito_swineflu haha I only have hand tools! This is basically mitre box (not really but that’s the idea) and then shooting the 45s with a shooting board
in reply to frew

I used to have a very precise hand mitre saw, but it wasn't cheap.
in reply to frew

I'd love to hear about the mistakes you've made! I've been wanting to make some and it would be super useful to know what I'm inevitably going to do wrong even despite knowing what they are.
in reply to Oliver Jensen

@ojensen I’ll probably write up an article about them soon, but in short my current pov is: really make sure all four sides are square, make sure that your shooting board is set up properly so you get perfect (and square!!!) 45s, make sure that the parallel portions are the same length after shooting, and MAKE SURE you cut things over long. at least for these frames, 1/8” isn’t extra enough and 1/4” isn’t extra enough.
in reply to frew

@ojensen oh also I find sharpening a rabbet plane a huge hassle, but that’s Kindav another story
in reply to frew

Better than the last two, still plenty of room for improvement. Working on ripping out what I need for the last frames now. #woodworking
