🪡 #Repairing our clothes has been shown to displace the need for buying new items by 82%.
This shows that we’re placing value on the pieces already in our wardrobes, showing the #BigCompanies that we don’t want to keep replacing items,
But mending is a skilled task that requires tools most people don't own.
All of your examples are "visible mending" which is coming from a place of "I have the social clout to get away with mended clothes", anyone subject to a dress code probably can't swing that.
Many items of "fast fashion" are so poorly constructed mending won't add much life once they have begun to fail.
The real question is: What can be done to make mending feasible?
@elithebearded Go to archive.org, download one the many sewing instruction books copyrighted before ~1911. Almost every book has instructions on mending and garment repair; people then did not throw out garments, they patched and mended them until the fabric was so worn it was used for cleaning. Most techniques used simple hand sewing tools; the most "exotic" tool is a darning egg for mending socks.
Remember, before the sewing machine, all garments were made by hand. It is time consuming, but quite possible, and extremely low-tech. All the early machines could do was straight stitch.
@elithebearded It is a skill, and yes, it's not acceptable to wear (visibly) mended clothes in certain situations. It is a skill that can be taught and learned, though - and it's becoming more and more acceptable to mend things instead of throwing them away again. There are very many ways to make it subtle, too!
I was taught how to darn a sock in school, and the basic mending techniques are simple enough that they could also be taught in school, and until fairly recently also were. But this does still require a certain amount of manual dexterity, even if you've acquired the skill and you can do a lot with just needle, thread & scissors... So taking your pile of mending to someone who's good and fast at it should need to be an option.
Repair Cafes being municipally supported with space and money would immediately help, making it possible for people to do occasional small paid work without it interfering with disability & pensions would be best long term. Taxing the heck out of fast fashion would be good on so many levels, but also for repairability.

This really is absolutely how it feels sometimes, and I'm glad I don't have to be hyperaware of the news for work any more and apply heavy filters to my feeds on fedi, the only social media I still use, and manage to mostly avoid the worst accidental interactions with the eternal debates about whether I have the right to exist.
Nonetheless, the day I finally started T, my feeds included horrifically detailed reports of the remarkably brutal murder of a trans man, shared by fellow trans people, as a warning.
And yes, I suppose the warnings are needed.
But happy as I am to have got here - and it's not my first time as part of a disproportionately high risk group (SW, unhoused, whatever) - there's a weight to an existence that is physically inseparable from the ceaseless cascade of warnings about its consequences.
