There's no fucking nuance here. There's no metaphor to be found. There's no allegory. There's no need to draw "similarities" between the Nazis then and the Nazis now, because it's the same people doing the same shit for the same reasons. It's not "similar". It's the same fucking thing.

And if you can't see that, if you've had blinders on for the last 92+ years, I just don't know how to fucking help you with that. If you think the Nazi attacks on trans people are somehow "recent", blame a Nazi, because Nazis are the reason you think that.

The gay people who were targeted in the Holocaust got some recognition at the end of the 20th century with the gay rights movement, but no one teaches about Hirschfeld in schools, almost no one in the mainstream knows that Berlin was the center of the world for queer and transgender people in the 1920s, no one knows about the Damenklubs and their complex gender dynamics, the passes that Hirschfeld issued, the way his research led directly to the pathologization in the DSM that lasted into the early 2000s. Dora Richter, Toni Ebel, and Gerda von Zobeltitz are not famous names like Anne Frank or Elie Wiesel. We should understand this not as a "return" to the acts of 1933 but as a continuation of a persistent, century-long erasure that has enabled this new wave to say things like "there was no such thing as transgender people until 5 years ago."

I don't particularly want to block the hashtags. Blocking each account is nuts.

It's obviously more important than ever that Canada diversify from the US. What better place to start than with the EU? We must forge tighter trading ties with the European Union and its individual member countries, and despite the UK government's apparent indifference to our plight with the UK as well.

I expect more from France and the UK, given their historical ties to colonial Canada and Canada's unwavering support for them in their times of need.

On the one hand, yes. Ebikes are very heavy to push out. On the other, I recently had a friend on a standard, solid, steel, newish bikepacking bike, crack the frame entirely in half on the new mexico/mexico border, and he had a LOT more than 20 miles to hike out. Which is to say: this is a respect the desert issue, more than a specific type of transport issue. If you're far enough in, in a car or on a bike, have a plan for how to get out or get help.

My jeep broke a U-joint halfway up a mountain once, before GPS, and that was potentially life-threatening.

It wasn’t life threatening, but it still took me a lot longer to get back than I’d planned. If it had been near dark or bad weather, it would have been uncomfortable. I think about that now whenever I’m out.

War with Canada is what Trump seems to have in mind. Fentanyl is not the only the big lie. That Canada does not really exist is the other. The way that this fiction is formulated is strangely Putinist. Trump's rhetoric about Canada uncannily echoes that of Russian propagandists towards Ukraine. The claim that the country is not real; that its people really want to join us; that the border is an artificial line; that history must lead to annexation... This is all familiar from Putin, as is Trump’s curious ambiguity about a neighbor: they are our brothers, they are also our enemies; they are doing terrible things to us, they also don't really exist. The imperialist rhetoric has to be seen for what it is, which is preparation not just for trade war but for war itself. And, it goes without saying, a disastrous one, in every sense, for everyone. (Except Putin and Xi, perhaps: the American- Canadian conflict is one way that Trump is handing them the world on a platter.)

As the game continues, things become more explicit, with people "stealing" from everyone but him and never placing the "robber" on Mark's empires. After a particularly egregious move by Dex in which he uses the robber to block Debbie, who's closest to catching Mark on victory points, I cry out. "You're letting him win, Dex and Derick. You're enabling it." I know it's nerdy and I'm ashamed of myself for caring, but I can't choke it down anymore. Everyone looks suitably shocked by the accusation. Dex and Debbie flash me looks of "don't say this in front of Mark." "What do you mean?" Dex asks brazenly. "You know exactly what I mean. You could have placed the robber anywhere but you never place it on any of Mark's hexes. You always place it on his closest competitor." "That's ridiculous," Dex says. "It's random," Derick chimes in, offering support. "No, it's the parts that aren't random that you're swinging his way, the negotiations where you're saying no to everyone else and then yes whenever he needs a resource, the robber, anything." They both look at me as if I'm crazy... for giving the game away. "Can't you see what they're doing?" I appeal to Mark. "You don't want to win that way?" "'m not winning that way," he says. He genuinely doesn't see it. Seems perplexed by my outburst. I retreat to silence but shake my head at Dex and Derick and everyone else who has agreed not to see what is really going on.

@whitequark @mcc maybe? I'd be concerned about atomicity, if that's the goal maybe something log-structured? FAT-style structures are not known for their transactionality or robustness.

Or Sqlite, as you said, which is basically that.

@mcc @whitequark Nintendo switch savefiles are effectively a custom transactional filesystem. Each savefile has two remapping tables, so the file can be fragmented at will and the primary table can be swapped only once everything else has been written to disk

And I am wondering on what basis can a university revoke a degree already granted.

Unless there was some form of some diffuse in earning the degree, it doesn’t seem to be the basis for them to do this.

I would also suggest that they would make a claim of violating some code of conduct to expel them. The students can turn around and sue the living daylights out of them for arbitrarily you know, defrauding them of their tuition
