Is it "AI" or do they think it's a solid decision to give their customers a dose of freakish body horror whenever they finish a lesson? I couldn't get a picture of it, but the last time I opened the app, there was a brief flash of Duo the owl screaming and looking like this emoji 😱 . I wish I were joking.
@secretsloth They updated the app literally as I was talking to you, and when I logged back in to do my daily lesson, now you can't practice to earn hearts at all anymore, you have to watch ads. I am not down with this. I've got a 3000+ day streak like an anchor but I need to give up the habit and figure out some other way to learn I guess.

The movie "The Lives of Others" was released in 2006. A major plot point in the movie is when the protagonist discovers that his home audio was monitored 24/7. As a viewer, you are supposed to be horrified that such a violation of privacy could occur.
It's unbelievable how routine surveillance in private spaces has become for so many people, I really don't get it.
And it doesn't take much imagination at all to consider these recordings (soon) being used by an autocratic government in bed with the surveillance companies, for exactly the same purposes as the bad old days of the DDR.

In other pinball news there's a sub-$1000 home-use two-thirds-scale pinball up on kickstarter which, honestly, they're probably not gonna pull that off. But if they did, it'd be REVOLUTIONARY. Like, that would be SO good for pinball.
Pinball's big problem is its cost, everything flows from that.

Now this new $1k machine is made by one of the Arcade1up people (y'know, those cheap-feeling toy arcade machines at costco) so it might well suck, but the crucial question is HOW MUCH is it gonna suck? 'cause if it only sucks a little bit, if it's like 60% as much fun as a $5k machine but it costs $1k, then honestly we're cooking
And if we can harden a $1k machine to be an arcade-ready $2k coin-op, then that can go out at 50c play rather than $1 (increasingly $1.50) and that REALLY opens things up for pinball to become more accessible to more people

had a friend that sold some random 90s Bally pin he got out of an abandoned bar for like $15k to some dentist. This guy then sent it to an old guy that runs a straight up arcade machine racket, who charged him a bunch more money to make it look slightly cleaner, and then added a bunch of gaudy LEDs in it. That went into his freshly built pinball annex on his mansion. Pinball machines deserve to be free, not in some secret lair.
