The image is a meme divided into two parts. The top part features an animated scene from an anime, showing a muscular man in a white outfit lifting another man in a blue outfit off the ground. The man in blue has a woman with blonde hair clinging to his back. The background is a clear blue sky. The text at the bottom of this part reads, "Getting mad doesn't make you stronger, that's not how it works!"

The bottom part of the image shows a close-up of a man with a serious expression, sweating, and looking to the side. The text above him reads "Barbarians." The background is blurred, with a hint of a curtain and a plant. The meme humorously contrasts the animated character's advice with the man's expression, suggesting that he might be a "barbarian" who doesn't heed the advice.

“Europe is full of technical talent, including the people who built much of the technology powering the major American cloud providers. The only issue? Much of that European talent is employed by American companies or working on open-source projects as a hobby in their attic.

The question is: how do we combine talent and funding to create a better European cloud?”

I've told every student I've taught in the last decade that you should read the Simple Sabotage Field Manual, not just so that you are able to commit these small acts of sabotage, but more importantly so you can recognize these things as deliberate sabotage, when they're being done to you.

The image shows the interior of a refrigerator with multiple shelves filled with eggs. The eggs are predominantly white, arranged neatly in rows. On the bottom shelf, there is a noticeable mix of white and brown eggs, with the brown eggs interspersed among the white ones. The eggs are uniform in size and shape, with a smooth, glossy surface. The refrigerator's interior is white, and the shelves are also white, providing a clean and organized appearance. The text at the top of the image reads: "A good DM will mix up a treasure horde to make it value appropriate for the current campaign setting..."

I think the part of this that I don't understand is that... I'd thought that if you can get deterministic results about password compromise by comparing only hashes then those hashes are either unsalted or otherwise being mishandled at some step in the process.

I also didn't think that "unrelated accounts used by unrelated people coincidentally have the same password" is the same as "this password is compromised".

What am I missing?

in reply to mhoye

I haven’t used that service, but if it’s equivalent to AWS’s version, it only checks username-password combinations, not individual passwords. I imagine there’s a client-side component that hashes the credentials and submits them to an API, where they can be checked. I don’t know how they’d avoid a rainbow table attack though, unless the client is also generating a unique salt for each request, which would be computationally expensive at the point of comparison.
