Popular resistance in Trump's first term accomplished more than many realize. A history professor explores how quiet organizing in communities and workplaces had more impact than visible tactics like petitions and hashtags. buff.ly/FxJVTFk

It's nice to learn more about our planet's more obscure creatures!

Southern elephant seal.

Males can be as large as 8,800 pounds and 19 feet long. The females can be 2,000 pounds and 9 1/2 feet. This is one of the largest cases of sexual dimorphism.

The male southern elephant seal’s nose or proboscis is an inflatable organ. It’s used to warn other males during mating season and roaring.

Southern elephant seals can hold their breath for two hours and dive nearly 7,000 feet, which is about the same depth as a sperm whale.

Southern elephant seals mostly eat squid, mollusks, krill, cephalopods, and algae but with their deep dives it’s hard to know for sure.

Mudskippers (family Oxudercinae) are land-loving fish that can spend as much time, if not more, on land as they do in water.

A viral video on TikTok shows the bizarrely flappy faces of muntjac deer in all their glandular wonder. While it might look like the facial anatomy dreamt up by James Cameron’s Avatar, they’re actually an adaptation these animals have evolved to be able to scent mark their way through the wilderness.

@swope I just googled Descartes and apparently he spent a lot of time in bars with horses, and then disappeared from time to time.

Anyone know a good generic name for this style of connector? I tend to call them XLR but think that’s more specific to audio gear, found some similar labeled GX but those seem brand specific. What do you call these?
in reply to morgan

Either way, we use these M12 connectors all over the place in our stuff, in a variety of conductor counts.

Yeah my carpenter ants need more space to explore… look at how they have slowly gnawed down this tube. So today I hooked up a new outworld for them. #antkeeping #happyants #ants #antposting

Mmm. Microplastics!

I’m curious: How much space in your home do these ants occupy and how much more would you want them to have? How many levels (floor, eye level, ceiling, etc.)?

@helianthropy

They have about half of a book shelf. (Three shelves on a book shelf with six.)

They're becoming increasingly common in Mexico, I even got to ride in a BYD Uber once. I think a big part of the appeal there is that they make cheaper/smaller models than Western companies do.
