you don't need to use URL shorteners; the mastodon protocol counts every link as 23 characters anyway. It's much better for security and transparency to post the actual link.

this is outrageous. Even if they entered the US illegally (which is not a safe assumption), they should not be treated this way.

Calling a bike "Wallke" seems less than optimal advertising - I immediately imagined myself wallking the thing home with a flat tyre.

They should have gone with "Ridde"

In Seattle, 82-year-old Ned Johnson received a letter from his bank offering condolences to his wife—because, according to the government, he was dead. His Social Security checks vanished. His Medicare was cancelled. His credit was flagged as “deceased” making it impossible to get a loan.

It took weeks of toil through bureaucratic hell just to prove he was still breathing. thegodpodcast.com/p/doges-dead…

Dear God, how many other people who are not as media savvy as Ned have been "deceased" but we haven't heard about them yet?

I can't believe that less than half a year ago, I got my ham radio license only because morse code is no longer required, and couldn't imagine why anyone who sent CW wanted more than one key — and now I have purchased two keys, printed another I wasn't satisfied with, designed my own 3d-printed key, and am pondering coming up with my own design to machine from metal as well.

I've also cranked up my call sign copy practice to 20WPM which means I'm not getting them all, but I no longer expect it to be December before I can copy 20WPM comfortably.

in reply to smellsofbikes

@smellsofbikes Thank you! Once I got to the point that I could run morse code head copy practice while commuting, I started learning faster. Also, now I look forward more to days I work from the office because I get almost an hour of drill in driving to and from the office! 🎉

(Also, I like the people I work with... ❤️)

in reply to Michael K Johnson

You’re closing in on HAM nirvana. All that’s left is to build a radio and antenna from junk parts you found for free, power it with an old rusty bike connected to a junk car alternator, and use that to make contact with someone on the other side of the world.
in reply to djb_rh

@djb_rh I probably shouldn't simultaneously ride the bike to generate power and have it tuned up as an antenna though! 😀

Today we wish a happy 10th BIRTHDAY to our most perfect munchkin mama Prudence! Rescued her at about 8 mo. old, and she's gone from super scaredy-cat to mother of six kids to one of the happiest cats ever. She never had a chance to be a kitten when she was young, but she's sure making up for it now! Love you Mama!

Seriously, YouTube??

I purposely leave off mid-rolls for first few days to reward viewers who watch within first push for a video. (And only add one per 10 min after—YouTube adds more)

This means I'll have to do more work to give viewers a slightly-better viewing experience 🙁

The male southern elephant seal’s nose or proboscis is an inflatable organ. It’s used to warn other males during mating season and roaring.

Southern elephant seals can hold their breath for two hours and dive nearly 7,000 feet, which is about the same depth as a sperm whale.

Southern elephant seals mostly eat squid, mollusks, krill, cephalopods, and algae but with their deep dives it’s hard to know for sure.
