Got my "rig", which seems like an excessive word for this handheld device. First up: let's scan some frequencies and see if I can hear anything. #ham #radio #AmateurRadio
in reply to Peter Drake

Glad to have helped! I assumed that it must be possible and went looking. πŸ˜€

(I have the really inexpensive TD-H3 HTs and the manual is so completely useless. The replacement nicsure firmware is not only so much better than stock, but the nicsure documentation is way better than stock. But I would have hoped a higher-end radio would have a better manual...)

If you haven't yet found repeaterbook.com it should help you find local repeaters.

If you haven't yet found chirp, it can be used to program your radio with an adapter cable and integrates with repeaterbook.com to help you get your local repeaters programmed.

Then you can scan in channel mode instead of VFO mode, which will really help for not stopping to visit random bits of static junk. I scanned in VFO mode in the first day or two of owning my HTs to sample the local environment, and then got channels programmed in and scanned channels instead.

this is the third revision of the MNT Reform Next motherboard, assembled today by @theawesomerandomness. the biggest notable changes from the second rev: upgrade from RP2040 to RP2350A as the main system controller chip, and a different main charger/dc-dc chip+layout. will work on bringup tomorrow.
in reply to Luke Wren

@wren6991 hehe so firstly, there's the idea to try to drive the laptop display directly by the rp2350a HSTX -> HDMI (i mean DVI ofc) -> STDP2600 (unfortunately EOL but lets see) -> DP so we could do things like make an instant-on bios-like environment/serial debug console etc. this will only work if i manage to get it to produce sth like 1920x1080@50Hz @1bpp at least (maybe less Hz possible).

and yes, running on the hazard3 cores would be extra neat!

in reply to lucie lukas "minute" hartmann

@wren6991 the whole console thing is possible because there's an existing UART connection to the keyboard (needed for power stuff) and optional UART to the main SoC.

Tolle Nachrichten!

Kaum jemand nutzt Vorkasse.

Was nutzt ihr sonst fΓΌr Zahlungsmethoden?

in reply to Timo

A somewhat delayed review of 1000xResist, the best game I played last year and one of the best games I've ever played:

exple.tive.org/blarg/2025/03/2…

in reply to mhoye

An element of your thesis, to me, is AAA publishers' deliberate embrace and cultivation of games-as-identity-props, which in turn leads to the most vocal customers also being heavily motivated to take developers' stated intentions at face value and to dismiss critique that runs contrary to it (because it also runs contrary to the identity statement they're making).

mhoye reshared this.

in reply to Owen

Exempla gratia: _is_ Spec Ops: The Line's white phosphorous scene an effective and caustic critique of Gaming As Usual (as you put it) and the player's moral complicity, or is it a heavy-handed and frankly hokey plot device designed to trigger a cheap emotional thrill?

(Both, obviously, but you may recall some very tense arguing over that point...)

in reply to Owen

Spec Ops: The Line - and for that matter Nolan North's extensive fanbase - both exist in the context of the larger "shooter games are How You Be A Manly Gamer" identity product.
in reply to Owen

@owen
One thing about @grimalkina's work around "identity threat" - an incredibly important and underappreciated idea, IMO - is how easily it can be, and how often it is deliberately, weaponized.
in reply to mhoye

@owen this is a really sharp good observation Mike and I'd love to see you write more about it too (thinking of your posts here about symbols and semiotics), scientific papers can't always go to the level of industry/field commentary that we need as part of this picture. Gonna muse on this for a while.
@Owen
in reply to Dr. Cat Hicks

You've absolutely cursed me with this insight, because now I see it at the root of so much awful. Perfomative identity (masculinity, politics) plus the threat of perceived identity-inadequacy becoming the chain reaction of mass violence. "Hiring for passion" not because you're hiring for investment or caring but because you're after people who will shackle their identity to their jobs, signaling their identity as tool of manipulation, a managerial attack surface.

@grimalkina @owen

I've said before that I give every kid I teach the Simple Sabotage Field Manual so they have that language in hand when it's being done to them, and now I want to write something like it for the human mind, the Psychological Sabotage Field Manual, so people can recognize when they're under attack.

in reply to mhoye

@grimalkina @owen I mean, what is a cult if not an identity-threat hostage situation?
in reply to mhoye

@grimalkina @owen

I recall talking to someone once who called his company and his romantic relationship "we" and it stood out to me.

When I was younger I identified more with a programming language or framework. Much good came from this community but it also hurt more when I didn't like where it was going. I don't know whether I am immune to it now as fundamentally I care about what I am doing, but I am glad I am more aware of the risks at least.

And this was overall quite positive.

in reply to Owen

@owen I've probably spent too much time in my life thinking about this stuff, and standing on a streetcorner yelling "angry birds is actually guernica wake up people" has not been a successful self-promotion effort, but I was definitely on team "if that actually was intended as some sort of critique it was as ham-handed as it could possibly have been". "dot dot dot" had more to say.

Finally feel like there's enough ducks in a row to say... I've got a new job!

I'm excited about the new role and looking forward to getting my career back on track.

#GitHub tip:

Don’t post β€œAny updates?” style comments on open source threads. Any updates would be there already. Open source is a gift; bugging maintainers acts like you're entitled to results. I just mark such comments as spam.

If you want to see something done, do something to help: research specifications, find an existing implementation, write a test case, draft the docs, write a draft implementation, do some code review, test the PR locally, or just anything to help the project.

I officially no longer feel embarrassed about the time I was whining to my best friend about my now-ex via email, and the Sun was glaring so bad on my screen that I didn't realize when the mouse jumped on my screen and accidentally cc'd it to the now-ex.

No, that wasn't what ended it. His narcissism ultimately did, but yeah, that's a thing that definitely made things worse for me. In retrospect, I wish he'd just cut me loose back then. Instead, he yanked my chain for another 4 years. Then I finally wised up and made a clean break.

Anyway, I'm no longer embarrassed about that. Serves him right anyway!
