Someone, somewhere, planned this based on requirements and specifications that will remain a mystery for all time.
(Yes I know it's likely a converted pool but that doesn't make the end result any less weird.)

I would've absolutely loved swinging on all those railings when I was five. 10/10 design.

It seems likely that a lot of swinging has happened near those railings.

Wow, this Pixelfed bug is *nasty*. Allowed users to access private posts of remote users they're not following so long as another user on the same Pixelfed server legitimately followed that account.

If you're running a Pixelfed server, definitely upgrade immediately now that the vulnerability is publicly known.

NASA’s Parker Solar Probe will make its 23rd close approach of the Sun tomorrow March 22, 2025 at 22:42 UTC.

At perihelion, it will be at a distance of just 6.1 million km from the solar surface, traveling at a speed of 692,000 km/h, matching its previous record set during perihelion 22 on Dec 24, 2024.

For comparison, the perihelion of planet Mercury is at 45.3 mil km.

The NASA Parker Solar Probe, 6 days after its 23rd close approach of the Sun, is now transmitting detailed spacecraft status to Earth via the 34 meter antenna of station 35 at the DSN site in Canberra.

Transmit/Receive band: X (~8 GHz)
Downlink data rate: 160.2 bps

Science data will be downloaded in a few days over the higher rate Ka-band link using the 0.6-meter High Gain Antenna (HGA) dish, at data rates of 167 kbps and higher.

Interestingly, the NASA Voyager 1 spacecraft is downloading data to Earth at the same 160 bps rate over X-band as the Parker Solar Probe, but using the larger 70m dish at DSN Madrid and a larger 3.7m antenna on the spacecraft.

However Voyager 1 is 24.9 billion km from Madrid, 157 times farther then the Parker Solar Probe.

Receive power = 10^-22 kW for both spacecraft.

Komoot seems to be much better in Europe?!? I paid for and tried to use Komoot here in Vancouver, Canada and it wasn't great (bicycle routes were not good). Being bought by the Evernote acquirers doesn't bode well. dcrainmaker.com/2025/03/komoot…
in reply to mhoye

@mhoye does Trailforks work well for commuting in a city like Vancouver or Burnaby or Richmond ? I don’t mountain bike or go off road. Gravel is ok since I ride a 1946 45 pound “ladies” Schwinn with balloon tires as long as the gravel road is on the way to a Filipino or Korean restaurant or cafe with pourover coffee 😀

"The US Postal Service has been struggling for years" because the Post Master General appointed during Trump's first term, who Biden couldn't be assed to replace*, spent the last 5 years running it into the ground.

It's the classic GOP tactic of:
1. Ruin the thing
2. Yell about the ruined thing
3. Privatize the thing

* Yes, the PMG is appointed by a Board of Governors, not the POTUS, but Presidents find ways to make things happen when they want to.

The image is a meme featuring two side-by-side panels of characters from the animated series "The Amazing World of Gumball." The left panel shows a pink character with large, expressive eyes and a wide, happy smile, with text above that reads: "LOOKING FOR PLAYERS! SYSTEM: THE ONE YOU WANT TO PLAY TIME OF SESSION: SPECIFICALLY WHEN YOU ARE AVAILABLE! PREMISE: SOMETHING THAT FITS ALL YOUR INTERESTS!" The right panel shows the same character with a red face, furrowed brows, and an angry expression, with text above that reads: "20$ PER SESSION." The meme humorously contrasts the enthusiasm of the left panel with the frustration of the right panel, likely commenting on the cost of joining a gaming session.

it also doesn’t really work?

Even $20 per person will not give you a good per hour rate if you’ve done any prep whatsoever.

I do not understand the economics of paid GMs at this level.

@fraggle The milky way turns either clockwise or counterclockwise depending upon what your frame of reference is

If the frame of reference determines the facts (all galaxies turn CW from our FoR), is that a privileged frame of reference, or is there some way I’m not thinking of where all galaxies everywhere are predominantly turning CW no matter what the frame of reference is?

CW/CCW needs a reference frame, so how can all galaxies favor CW from everywhere

@Extra_Special_Carbon as per the article, they're talking about direction of rotation relative to the direction of rotation of our Milky Way galaxy (more galaxies spin in the opposite direction)

To be clear, Trump does not have the authority to do this. The constitution explicitly states that "The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof; but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations, except as to the Places of chusing Senators"

That is, federal elections are governed by the states and by congress, not the president.

LOL... do you think the constitution is going to save the US? The current administration is dismantling democracy in broad daylight and changing elections to favor fascists is a done deal. You can point to what you know to be true and before Trump, you'd be right. We are witnessing the end of democracy. There is NOTHING anyone can do. Not you, not voters, not congress, not federal judges. Welcome to Amerikkka Comrade!

This is clearly pretext for doing what he tried to do several times already: Disregard election results he doesn't agree with.

Anyone who still thinks there'll be anything resembling normal midterms in '26 is deluded.

AAAARGH! I'm not at all surprised, but NIST's excellent whitepaper on Inclusive Language (NIST.IR.8366) has been withdrawn:

This was an excellent resource that I reference all the time. I feared it would go away so I made a snapshot a few weeks back that I uploaded here: nygren.org/archived/NIST.IR.83…

A law professor friend tells me that LLMs have completely transformed the way she relates to grad students and post-docs - for the worse. And no, it's not that they're cheating on their homework or using LLMs to write briefs full of hallucinated cases.

agree with this nuanced take! There's an interesting future ahead of us as ML image models begin to show detailed control through longer prompts and other control methods we see more of these micro decisions becoming present in their output and the communication and artistic value increase. We also at the same time see more automation at the low end, with lower effort inputs producing higher fidelity work. Perhaps artists contextualization of their work is becoming more important?
