All I can say is that I'm so thankful I grew up in the 60's and 70's. Students have always been under surveillance, just not by the very institutions that were there to protect and develop them into thinking adults. It's almost always right wing powers that have been there doing that.
Another problem with the sort of surveillance described in that article is that the guy who vandalized the statue could have had his cell phone powered off well before getting near it. Then some hapless guy whose cell phone is on and happened to walk by slightly before it happened becomes a prime suspect.
Something to keep in mind about the terrorism designation of students/Tesla/protestors/presumably others: it justifies the national security letters and other forms of info gathering/surveillance. I don't think this danger is fully appreciated nor that of expanded NSA powers under a unitary executive war powers/invasion theory. Expect real repercussions from this.

Widespread surveillance poisons the cyberspace and the meatspace much more than any occasional privacy breach. It makes people (justifiably) paranoid and wastes unimaginable amounts of resources. When I think about all the time and energy I spend evading the Big Brother's watchful eyes, I can only sigh.
now do K-12 schools. the tracking in those schools is outrageous. our rural high school is full onboard with "smart passes" for leaving the class. they need their chromebook to sign out and in. some parents pushed back so at least there's an opt-out solution with a notebook. i will, however, add that there are a lot of parents who seem to think that the schools should be teaching kids about "how to behave". kids vandalizing the bathroom was, i think, the straw that tipped the desire to track, even though teachers probably know who the troublemakers are.
i think Ohio uses some "classroom dojo" software for primary level. plus study island for homework. these kids will have a digital footprint like none before.
Did another test run of the stained glass hemisphere, this time a 45 degree wide wedge from the Tropic of Capricorn down to the pole. I wanted to confirm that the (literal!) islands work, the whole reason I wanted to use water jet for this in the first place. And they do!
