Today is #WorldBackupDay. Don’t forget to make a backup and verify your backups too. I use the rsnapshot on my FreeBSD machine cyberciti.biz/faq/howto-instal… but can be installed on Linux too cyberciti.biz/faq/redhat-cetos… What do you use to make backups?

Cory Doctorow reshared this.

in reply to Rokosun

I run backuppc (on a linux server). I like that it makes hardlinks to identical files to maximize space efficiency across different machines and different times ... but it is a whole thing to setup and manage. I like that it keeps all my stuff local ... I'm increasingly skeptical of the cloud owning all my stuff. But when something breaks I have to fix it. I like that every time I've gone to restore a file or directory it has worked. I've looked at other things (rarely) and they were never nearly as space efficient (apparently I'm a data horder and been invovled in many projects that have pretty big data storage needs), so I've stuck with backuppc and it's still been rock solid for me.
in reply to Curt Olson

@clolsonus @tio

I'm also backing up my stuff to a local SSD instead of relying on cloud storage, partly due to my slower internet connection as well. And #Kopia also has deduplication and compression BTW, which is useful 'cause my SSD isn't that big.

An impulse purchase on AliExpress and I have a Zigbee Moes Universal smart IR remote control.
Integrated quickly into #HomeAssistant via Zigbee2MQTT and you can capture codes as well as send them, IR transmission seems good at sending to awkward receivers.

Unfortunately I didn't think about the fan I wanted to control which only has power toggle and increase/decrease commands and there's no way to send a definitive On at speed 3 but it will probably come in handy at some point.

in reply to SignalEleven

@signaleleven Thanks that gives me some thoughts and adding an energy sensing plug may allow me to determine if it’s on, just not as clean a solution as I’d first thought.
in reply to Andrew

that is exactly how I did it (although I wasn't automating it. I would just run the script and look at the value to make sure it turned on or off - I only needed it for a couple of days)

But I'm glad I helped

Awful. The #BrokenTimes sanewashes anti-vacc, anti-science, telling us to hear them. No, journalism exists not to to listen to ignorance but to combat it.

Please don't order lilies for your friends and lovers if they have a cat. Really... a gift of flowers for a cat owner is... I won't say it's *always* a bad idea, but consider if the cat owner has any house plants.

If they have no house plants there is a *reason* for that. It's called: The Cat. You can have house plants OR a cat but not both. Cats chew on plants, and they will chew on lilies and get sick and possibly die. No, they don't know not to eat these plants. They dig right in.

I'd already seen the image (and nodded soberly and thought "yup, good warning"). But for some reason, when I read the alt text, I suddenly busted a gut laughing. Something about reading the actual words "a cat photoshopped into a hazmat suit" just gave me a major dose of absurdity.

Anyway, kudos for the info and the excellent alt text!

in reply to myrmepropagandist

we have three cats. I wasn’t aware of the toxic combination of lilies vs cats. My wife loves fresh flowers and it makes her feel good to get them. I’ve learned to either get a bouquet with a single type of non-lily flower (they’re not that hard to find), or use a flower shop where I can ensure lilies are not part of the bouquet. She also has some potted plants that are definitely NOT toxic to cats. We also have grown catnip to appease them.

Making a DIY #Eurorack case from 3M screw rails, MFOS bipolar power supply, and scrap wood I found in this house I moved into last year. This is mainly a project for getting more practice using power tools. I lived in small rental accommodation nearly all my life so had little reason to own any until now.

Which way should I orient it? Power entering from lower right or from the upper left?

looks nice, keep going! What are you planning for the empty space -- 1U row or other utilisies/jacks?
in reply to N0ah

@N0ah Plan?
There's no plan.
This is purely for exploration of the eurorack format.
The empty space will probably be for experimenting with op amp circuits, or for a higher current power supply, or for batteries to make it portable, or to store patch cables, etc.

It's quite funny to read articles like this that claim it's some kind of race/competition and saying Mastodon "... has struggled to grow its active user base". That's like comparing a diamond to a donkey and claiming the diamond has struggled to become sufficiently donkeyesque. What's wrong with these diamonds? They don't even have a tail. This one doesn't say eeeyoooore. It is clearly therefore not as good as this donkey which just kicked me in the balls.

I spent this past week building a new chicken coop and run. Still a few finishing touches needed but overall I'm very pleased with it.

I have built a few chicken coops and I have to say that one is very nice!! Well done!

@Tendar

Well, when #Trump is really "pissed off " there would be plenty of reasons to be) then he should use sanctions, not tariffs. US-Russian trade volume is a meager $1.5 billion a year. Tariffs would do nothing.

Those would be the sanctions that trump wants to eliminate to help his buddy putin.

@Katharsisdrill

Me, too.

I actually played parts of the first campaign as well, back in the early 1990s. But it's been so long that I only remember fragments.

in reply to Jürgen Hubert

I'm playing the same campaign as a Beggar who became a Judicial Champion already. A character checked out the minator pits in the last session, but we've mostly been doing the main plot line involving a box where I managed to get a barb in my leg that caused an injury that will take a few months to heal so the best fighter is hobbling around on crutches.
