I have not read this book because I hate git, but jcoglan knows their stuff so I bet this book could be of interest to someone who is not literally at my level of writing alternate VCSes to avoid having to touch git

Google’s new experimental Gemini 2.5 model rolls out to free users
Google's improved AI model is now available for free, but usage is limited.
arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/0…
in reply to Ars Technica

Does it set kitchen timers, manage a shopping list or play media when asked?

Assistant did those things well. Gemini couldn't and wouldn't so I switched back. In the meantime, Google insisted on mashing more half backed AI into assistant so it's also not good at those jobs anymore.

How is classified information typically shared and can officials declassify secrets whenever they want? A national security expert explains just what’s wrong with sharing war plans on Signal, and how it’s supposed to work, instead: buff.ly/FKSeEoU

The image features a person dressed in military camouflage attire, including a jacket with an American flag patch on the sleeve and a name tag reading "MRA 2U." The individual is wearing a large, conical, camouflage-patterned wizard hat, which humorously contrasts with the military uniform. The background shows a white door and a wall clock. The text overlay at the top reads, "Just hit 7th level... Wizard 5 / Fighter 2 Feeling cute w my new hat." At the bottom, the text reads, "Action Surge Wizard." The image humorously combines elements of military and fantasy themes.

Around this time last year, the discovery of the XZ Utils backdoor sent shockwaves through the Linux community. This incident highlighted the critical importance of supply chain security and the potential for malicious actors to compromise widely used open-source tools. It serves as a stark reminder for ongoing vigilance and robust security practices. Do you remember it? en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/XZ_Uti…

The combo of monopoly, unlimited property rights, and erosion of privacy rights souped up by AI has created a toxic world where private companies have both the legal and practical power to deny essential services to people who criticize them. This post by @pluralistic is his clearest formulation of the problem yet:

Conclusion: a healthy economy must have strong anti-monopoly provisions, or it won't stay healthy for long.

And early on they were quite concerned that the government, with its natural advantages, would try to compete in a market unfairly. There are cases that examine that.

@CassandraVert @Steve @MidniteMikeWrites @KevinCarson1

I suspect such is inevitable. With power and money so entwined in this world, the allure of fiddling the market for the benefit of people who have such power and money is overwhelming.

At the risk of inciting a thousand Anarchist responses to the contrary: Since we cannot entirely eliminate power from our governments, we should focus on the achievable - eliminating billionaires. Preferably by taxation.

#blender If I create a data-block type custom property via python, it can't be edited in the UI until you select the custom property's settings and click OK (without changing anything)

In a fresh scene, I do:
cube = C.selected_objects
[0] cube["mat"] = D.materials

[1]Is there a way to surface the editable UI from a script?

cc @sybren

in reply to Pablosaur

Best way is to not use these custom properties at all, and actuall have your add-on register `bpy.types.Object.custom_material = bpy.props.PointerProperty(...)`, then write UI code to expose this somewhere sensible.

If you do want to use these custom props, then maybe use `cube.id_properties_ui("mat")`

The image depicts a character dressed in a blend of Western and futuristic attire. The character stands confidently, wearing a long, brown, tattered coat with a wide-brimmed hat. The coat is open, revealing a silver chest plate and arm guards, suggesting a mix of historical and futuristic elements. The character's pants are dark, with a brown belt featuring a large, ornate buckle, and a holster on the right hip holding a revolver. On the left thigh, there are three knives strapped to the belt. The character's boots are brown, with silver armor on the shins, and a rifle is slung over the shoulder. The background is a gradient from dark to light, emphasizing the character's detailed outfit.
