in reply to fredy cosmoline

oh noooo what a calamity i have to wait here on the beach for three hours
in reply to fredy cosmoline

Go for a swim. That's plenty of time to dry off before your train arrives
in reply to fredy cosmoline

marine layer rolling back in. a northbound metrolink appears! my southbound train is only 15 minutes away now

delightfully cuboidal creature spotted at carlsbad village station transit center
in reply to fredy cosmoline

along the series of state beaches and campgrounds in carlsbad there are several bus stops with no sidewalks. it feels like were in the wilderness! also there is a huge dredging operation going on, as you can see out the cool slidey window (the best kind of bus window)
in reply to fredy cosmoline

stopped for several minutes at encinitas coaster station. a coaster train arrived shortly after we did. i wonder if this is a timed transfer point. also behold the eagleburger bus
in reply to fredy cosmoline

torrey pines! absolutely gorgeous area that the coaster and surfliner completely bypass. this is why you gotta ride the 101! and now we're entering mts territory - does our destination draw nigh?
in reply to fredy cosmoline

the bus is filling with students. we are in the UCSD sphere of influence now. and the marine layer only grows thicker

I'm very angry at Unity again after reading this:
theverge.com/decoder-podcast-w…

The most I got out of it is that Unity "talked to their customers and explained why they raised license fees so much."

Go look up their quarterly public financial disclosures. They are losing _so_ much money, and their only option is to make it your problem. They've made so many non-gaming acquisitions that haven't worked out and need someone to pay for them.

in reply to slembcke

I'm especially just pissed that they say "industry is our fastest growing segment". Yeah... I know. Unity has decided that "industry" customers should pay more for the same thing, and they get to decide if you are an industry customer or not. Why _wouldn't_ they want it to be their fastest growing segment?!
This entry was edited (3 months ago)
in reply to slembcke

And to be extra clear, I'm currently unemployed because they decided the tiny startup I was working was an industry customer because they got to decide that we had rich "clients" even if we don't get money from them. -_-

"Please pay us tens of thousands extra now or we shut down your business." Now we don't have enough to pay everyone AND Unity. Fuck off!

Friends, we all know that Agile™ is junk and Scrum and Sprints as practices by certified™ masters™ of same are managerial control tools, not helpful processes for getting work done.

Agile Manifesto good.
Agile as currently inflicted on teams bad.

We all know this through lived experience, but saying that to manglement isn't enough. What research and or books exist on this topic?

I've read at least one study about this, which got the No True Scotsman fallacy directed right at it when I posted it in our work Slack channel for discussing programming-relevant white papers. The No True Scotsman fallacy is super-popular when you try to talk about this. Sigh.

I think this is the neatest this bookshelf is ever gonna be! I haven't attached the cabinet to the wall yet (needs different fittings) but the record player is all hooked up!

The pre-amp and power socket are hidden in the bottom half of the skinny bookshelf, and the amplified signal goes behind the bookshelves to the main amp under the TV

I mean, hucking a whole wolf through a second story window is a pretty ridiculous scene, especially if you picture him winding up beforehand.

The Pentium processor, like many others, implements its instructions in microcode. Each step of an instruction is described by a micro-instruction, stored in the chip in the microcode ROM.
This die photo shows the parts of the Pentium. Let's take a quick look at the microcode ROM...1/N
in reply to Ken Shirriff

The Pentium has three layers of metal wiring. This photo shows the bottom metal wiring (M1), vertical lines that connect to the silicon transistors underneath. The horizontal polysilicon lines are wiring that forms part of the transistors. 4/N
in reply to Ken Shirriff

The Pentium's microcode ROM holds 414,720 bits in total: 4608 micro-instructions. For more photos of the Pentium's microcode circuitry along with a detailed explanation, see my latest blog post: righto.com/2025/03/pentium-mic…

The image features a detailed black and white illustration of a crab. The crab is depicted in a realistic style, with a textured shell and prominent claws. It is carrying a large, sack-like bag on its back, secured with a rope tied in a bow. The bag appears to be made of a coarse material, possibly burlap, and is open at the top, suggesting it might be used for holding items. The crab's eyes are visible, giving it a lifelike appearance. The background is a plain, beige color, which contrasts with the detailed drawing of the crab and the bag. Below the illustration, the text "CRAB OF HOLDING" is written in a serif font within a rectangular border, indicating the title or theme of the image.

"The claim could not be independently confirmed." ← how can this happen? Don’t they take photos as evidence when they dig out corpses?

This is the one piece of evidence that would not rely on "someone said", and it can’t be independently confirmed? It was repeated multiple times in the article, but not confirmed?

@ArneBab it generally means the journos were unable to confirm the detail when they wrote the story. these things are often confirmed afterwards, but by then no one cares

ABOUT MARINE LE PEN’S CONVICTION

it’s interesting to see the hand-wringing over barring Le Pen from electoral politics for 5 years, not the 4 years of prison (2 of them commuted) that she needs to serve.

but am not going to spend time on what’s a rather pedestrian case of corruption by embezzlement.

no.

am going to bring attention to the case France needed; to smack awake it’s judicial & legal system: the Pelicot #Rape Trial

Dominique Pelicot jailed for 20 years

51 MEN WHERE CONVICTED IN THE #PELICOT #RAPE TRIAL

been avoiding CNN recently ―for obvious fascist reasons― but this is one helluva headline y’all need to sit with:

Gisèle Pelicot: France mass rape trial ends with 51 guilty verdicts - and fears justice hasn’t been served | CNN
cnn.com/2024/12/19/europe/peli…

51 men were convicted because those are the ones Pelicot’s lawyers had enough evidence to prosecute. there were many more men who participated in raping her for 20 years.

let that sink in…

in reply to your auntifa liza 🇵🇷 🦛 🦦

why refusing to address rape is one of the symptoms of a culture and a political system going down the rabbit hole of #fascism?

because it engenders #corruption at all levels of society.

consider the fact that Dominique Pelicot recruited fellow rapists from a social media site that was finally closed down even though there are 23,000 oustanding criminal cases related to it:

France Indicts Founder of Notorious Website Used in Pelicot Rape Case - The New York Times - nytimes.com/2025/01/09/world/e…

in reply to your auntifa liza 🇵🇷 🦛 🦦

ignoring rape cases, assuming that all men rape or that women ―especially white, cisgender women― do not rape, THAT IS PART OF THE BANALITY OF EVIL.

once you believe humans’ nature is to be predators, and can’t do anything about it, then all social contracts are null & void. THAT’S how #fascism flourishes, by rejecting any and all sociality, especially “do unto others”.

France is in an #antifa revival & the Pelicot case is its point of inflection. taking out Le Pen, is the cherry on top.

in reply to your auntifa liza 🇵🇷 🦛 🦦

PS: because People Mag won’t fluff celebrities nuts without fact-checking:

❝ In a deposition during the divorce proceedings, Ivana was under oath when she accused her estranged husband of rape.
[…]
"I referred to this as a 'rape,' but I do not want my words to be interpreted in a literal or criminal sense," Ivana said in a statement.❞
people.com/politics/ivana-trum…

the POTUS is a rapist because American culture is fundamentally fascist. the worse parts of USA culture inspired Mussolini & Hitler.

in reply to your auntifa liza 🇵🇷 🦛 🦦

Exactly this! Why is there always a throughline between rape & those who hold - or seek - fascist power? Because this is the kind of people to whom power = doing things to other people they'd rather you didn't. Which means the worse things they can do & get away with, the more powerful they feel. By their sick, twisted logic it's weird if you *don't* rape anyone; to them it's the power equivalent of leaving money on the table.

I have had the pleasure of meeting Hoshina Seki a couple of times while visiting the New York Buddhist Church in Manhattan and the American Buddhist Study Center located therein (of which Hoshina is president).

Here is an article written last year where Hoshina describes her path as a trans woman with the backdrops of life in America as a Buddhist woman and as a Japanese American.

I find it very pertinent today, especially as she describes attacks against Japanese immigrants and US citizens of Japanese descent by the US govt that mirror the ICE raids that we're seeing today.
