Fixing up this diesel hand pump I found in the garage/barn a while ago.

The leather seal around the piston was slipped out of place, but it was fixable - hope it'll stay in place. Apart from that, just one bolt broke and some rust, mostly on the outside, as the fuel inside had preserved it.

The aluminium parts are a really bad sand casting job, but it should hold anyways. May need some metal epoxy putty.

Cleaning up the parts now. Then test before painting.

Getting the broken bolt out took ages. Steel in aluminium gets stuck real good. My usual tricks failed and I had to drill it out. At least it wasn't stainless steel. Then some recutting of mangled threads and finding a replacement bolt.

Not done, but meanwhile I threw some phophoric acid on the steel parts.

Pump fixed. Reseating the leather cup was not enough, it also had leaky valves. The lower one fit into the drill chuck, so it was easy to lap.

For the upper one I had to get creative! See alt text for explanation.

Still didn't pump though. Troubleshooting eventually revealed the problem, the piston valve kept leaking due to wear around the center hole. Fixed by adding a washer and o-ring.

It pumps! This metering pump can supposedly be calibrated to 1l/turn.

With territorial threats from both Russia and the United States, The Kingdom of Denmark buys another 130 armored personnel vehicles from Finish manufacturer Patria.

Let us hope the American people stops the mad man Donald Trump, so we can use these vehicles against the Russians instead of sending them to Greenland.

This order comes after Denmark already ordered 115 CV9935 infantry fighting vehicles from Sweden in December.

MCP: The new “USB-C for AI” that’s bringing fierce rivals together
Model context protocol standardizes how AI uses data sources, supported by OpenAI and Anthropic.

in reply to Ars Technica

#Context is everything. TLAs change and evolve.

#ATM was a robo-#bank. Now, it's this little slice of now.

#TMI used to be the setting for a #nuclear #accident. Now, it's more than you want to know.

#MCP was what some of us might call a masculine-presenting anti-#feminist. Now, it's how various flavors of #AI can tell each other #stories.

in reply to Ars Technica

USB-C, the standard where you have to grab random cables to see if they do power at the level you want, data at the speed you want, and people literally sell hardware that's designed to test the things for functionality.... I know, let's emulate THAT!

This is great: stef.be/dpaint/

It's a Deluxe Paint-ish pixel art app that runs in your browser.

When I teach my digital fundamentals class, I try to get everyone to at least give GraFX2 a shot, but it's a hard swallow for most young folks. They tend to prefer Pixel Studio, which I really don't like. This might be a good alternative to try on 'em.

@mntmn Oh, good catch! I just assumed Workbench colours, but you're right, that sort-of peach colour is not the usual Workbench orange.

Ok, if I have this story correct, an American citizen with Palestinian heritage, married a nice boy from #India with a PhD in Middle Eastern Peace Studies. The girl says pro #Palestine things on her social media, but the boy, Badar Khan Suri, is fairly circumspect in his public statements. The people using #Jews as an excuse to attack #Arabs realize they can’t deport the American (yet), but they can deport her husband, even though he’s done nothing wrong.

Everyone needs to realize that the goal of the neonazis is to turn all of us against each other. They will use any excuse, and blame any other group to get away with atrocities. It’s trans people and Palestinians and Hispanics today, it’s gonna be Catholics, Jews and Leftists next, if history is any indication.

Alright. We're starting to get into the planning and coalesced action phase!!! Yay!!!!!

Jonathan V Last writes in Bulwark - How to think and act like a dissident in trump's America: thebulwark.com/p/how-to-think-…

It starts with:

"I was wrong about one big thing in 2024: I did not realize that most American institutions—the media, the legal world, big business, universities, the tech sector—would immediately capitulate to Trump."

and continues with:

"Once you accept that reality, our next steps become clear."

And lists out short and long term actions (with details). Plenty of room for discussion, hashing it out, disagreeing and counter ideas, and just plain trial and error (perfection is the enemy of good enough / hesitation kills and all of that).

Good to be in this place. Folks are not just fighting back but fighting back together.

in reply to Tinker ☀️

"And the moment you dare Trump to do what he’s always wanted: To take the mask all the way off and use force against American citizens."

The mask has been off for years. Most people didn't care about the brutality of the police against BLM protesters in 2020. Trump would order that kind of violence himself in a heartbeat and it would make no difference.

in reply to Tinker ☀️

"perfection is the enemy of good enough"

I think liberals really underestimate how toxic this sentiment is in this moment. We are here right now precisely because of "good enough", the standards must be raised. "Good enough" will not cut it in this fight.

What’s a ‘revisionist’ state? It’s a nation that wants to change the world order — whether by redrawing borders, shifting regional power, or rewriting global rules. It’s not just about disliking policies; it’s about reshaping the system itself. theconversation.com/what-is-a-…

This one was hard.

I wrote about being the wrong kind of victim.

The kind who stayed. The kind who didn't call the police. The kind who texted three days after.

And yes, it might make you feel uncomfortable, but it's the experience of many, many victims. So important to understand.

I am humbled by your strength.

It devastated me when, after decades of living alone with the pain, a close family member opened up and shared with us. Grieved to know what had been done. That she had carried so much for so long. Feeling unworthy of love because of what was done to her, not because of anything she had done. She is worthy. She was worthy all along. You are worthy, too.

Her children turned out wonderful, just as I am sure yours will. They are all grown now. Each talented and accomplished in their own right. All of them empathetic and caring.

A wise friend once shared with me that a sorrow shared is divided. May the sorrows you share through your writing be divided. Spread like dung on the heath, enabling seeds of goodness and hope to blossom. May the many joys, too, in the accomplishment of completing your book be multiplied.

The beauty in the work of your heart and your hands will endure for generations.

in reply to Jon Edwards

@jon Thank you for this really beautiful message. I'm glad the person you care for shared her pain with others. It's so important. So, so important for healing. My kids are doing well too. I think living all of the struggle, if you're aware of it, how it has affected you, really helps you to become a good parent. I'm lucky to have had a lot of therapy and also the space now for the last few years to heal a bit.

Huge hugs to you ❤️
