The image features a portrait of a young woman viewed from the side. Her hair is styled in loose curls, predominantly in shades of brown and orange, with some darker tones adding depth. The curls are voluminous and appear to be gathered up, with some strands framing her face. She is wearing a black spaghetti strap top, which is visible from the shoulder down to the upper chest. The background is a muted, textured beige, providing a neutral backdrop that contrasts with her hair and skin tone. The lighting is soft, highlighting the contours of her face and the texture of her hair. The woman's ear is visible, adorned with a small earring. The overall composition is balanced, with the subject centered and the background unobtrusive, allowing the viewer to focus on her features and hairstyle.

The mas.to moderation team has been suspending tons of these accounts over the past couple of weeks. I hadn’t even seen your post until someone on our team found it today.

For people who don’t know, it’s really hard to preemptively block these accounts. They use different email addresses/IPs and they’re on different instances. So we just have to suspend when we see them.

As someone with a number of pre-Y2K web books (purchased new) and who basically stopped caring around 2005, it was an interesting historical perspective. I had no problem with just run Apache locally for dev work. I did that until 2015 or so just for personal projects that were easier to do in CGI than CLI. (Consider the "rotate an image to make two points on a horizontal line" problem. Easy with an imagemap, hard with sh.

in reply to Peter Gleick

Boy you should see the numbers MSM used for the protest crowd sizes. I've literally discovered that they downgrade the size to the size grouping below it.

If less than 199 come (dozens): a few
If 200-1999 come (hundreds): dozens
If 1000-9999 come (thousands): hundreds
If greater than 10000 (ten(s of)thousands): thousands

And so on.

I know this because several times people who organized (who I've talked to afterwards to talk about sizes) received size estimates from police (because it's their job). And MSM always downgraded sizes from the estimates.

in reply to Peter Gleick

Welcome to the legacy media "neutrality." When hundreds of thousands go to protests, they write "thousands." When it's millions, they write "tens of thousands."

No wonder that their "approximation" of 1900 is twenty or so.

When I absolutely have to read something in the legacy media, I just mentally multiply the numbers they give by 100.

Strikes me that this vulnerability (ht @beep) is basically the decentralized network consequence of “three may keep a secret if two of them are dead.”

(The vulnerability is basically if a post is private or followers-only, then the software on •every• single instance that’s home to every person who has permission to read that post is responsible for keeping it secret, so if even one of those instances is compromised, the post is not secret anymore.) follow.ethanmarcotte.com/@beep…

This Pixelfed vulnerability seems like wildly bad news. fokus.cool/2025/03/25/pixelfed…

in reply to D. Olifant

IIUC, the originating server does need to grant permission for the private posts to be sent in the first place. You can’t just spin up a fedi instance and say to any random server, “Send me user X’s private posts!”

BUT…once the following server has permission to receive the private posts, it is responsible for keeping those secret from its •other• users on the same instances:

“This is where Pixelfed’s vulnerability comes in: Pixelfed was not waiting for a confirmation if a follow request was approved, it assumed that it was automatically approved. That is how any private posts made on (almost) any fediverse server could be leaked: if a Pixelfed server already had the private post (because of someone of Pixelfed followed the locked account with approval), it would show it to anyone else who also tried to follow the locked account, even if the locked account rejected the follow request.”

in reply to Paul Cantrell

@oli sounds like another reason to want social networking identities to be cryptographic identities - if your approval list is a list of public keys and your posts are only ever sent encrypted with one of those keys (or some optimized variation of that), then anyone can get your encrypted post but only authorized people can decrypt your post. Still means you have to trust the people and their client software, but its better

A strong arm with claws arrived. Small enough to drive into the living room, strong enough to dig holes or lift logs. With extra trenching and sand bucket.

Had some practice digging and then reinstalled the roof, which to my delight fits through the barn door.

Filled the grease gun and gave it some lube as it's been sitting outside all winter.

Only came with an engine manual, none for the machine itself, which is probably against some EU law.
