Happy Hump Day my fellow Fediversians. What a day and night yesterday. Senator Booker was amazing and inspiring, and it looks like the good people in Wisconsin understood the assignment - yes?

I wish you all a good day. Be well. Stay safe. Stay strong, get up stand up and find some good trouble to get into today. Peace and love to you all!

Cheers!

Happy Bird Week, to those who celebrate it!

Researchers recently discovered two new species of poisonous birds in Papua New Guinea, the regent whistler (Pachycephala schlegelii) and the rufous-naped bellbird (Aleadryas rufinucha), both containing batrachotoxin, a potent neurotoxin also found in poison dart frogs.

The Poison:
Both species contain batrachotoxin, a neurotoxin that, in higher concentrations, can cause violent muscle spasms, heart failure, and even death.

Location:
These birds are found in the jungles of Papua New Guinea.

Batrachotoxin:
This toxin is also found in the skin of poison dart frogs in Central and South America.

Other Poisonous Birds:
Besides the newly discovered species, other known poisonous birds include the hooded pitohui and the variable pitohui, also native to Papua New Guinea.
How they acquire the toxin:
The birds acquire the toxins through their diet, primarily by consuming beetles from the genus Choresine.

It has taken way longer than we hoped, but we now have our own instance. I have just finished migrating my account so I would appreciate it if you could boost this post so our little instance gets noticed by a bunch of servers. Here's a picture of my cats Huginn and Muninn so I am at least adding something to the fediverse instead of just asking for something.

The Wikimedia Foundation, which owns Wikipedia, says its bandwidth costs have gone up 50% since Jan 2024 โ€” a rise they attribute to AI crawlers.

AI companies are killing the open web by stealing visitors from the sources of information and making them pay for the privilege

Alt text:

Since January 2024, we have seen the bandwidth used for downloading multimedia content grow by 50%. This increase is not coming from human readers, but largely from automated programs that scrape the Wikimedia Commons image catalog of openly licensed images to feed images to Al models. Our infrastructure is built to sustain sudden traffic spikes from humans during high-interest events, but the amount of traffic generated by scraper bots is unprecedented and presents growing risks and costs.

The graph below shows that the base bandwidth demand for multimedia content has been growing steadily since early 2024 โ€” and there's no sign of this slowing down. This increase in baseline usage means that we have less room to accommodate exceptional events when a traffic surge might occur: a significant amount of our time and resources go into responding to non-human traffic.

The "United States Disappeared Tracker' is brilliant, though we should be sickened that it is needed. Huge kudos to Prof. Danielle Harlow.

A model of a Man Engine in the #Mining #Museum in #SanktAndreasberg - an elevator of sorts which allowed miners to get into a mine and out again far faster than by climbing ladders.

I really encourage you to read the Wikipedia entry to understand the concept. And then you can inflict this on your #ttrpg campaign the next time the player characters delve into an old mine.

Tempeh-Kimchi-Taco trifft auf Allgรคuer Kรคsespรคtzle-Truck? Powered by Dieselgenerator?

Sorry, geht gleich wieder.

Titan, the largest moon of Saturn, is a fascinating and deeply alien world. Many bodies in space are, well, dead. No weather, no climate, no geology. Not Titan! Things are Happening on Titan, but none of the elements building the complexity and weather of this planet are the same as those on Earth.

I really enjoyed this video, and here are some exciting images. What happens when a river of methane carves "rock" of water-ice and organic sand?

even a dead world can have geology if something collides with it. Or if it gets enough radiation.
