It is a true deep-sea predator, which lives on the seabed between 200 and 2000m deep and uses its dorsal appendage full of bioluminescent symbiotic bacteria as bait to attract its prey, in the same way as in the popular film "Finding Nemo".
The reason for its presence in such shallow waters is uncertain. It may be due to illness, an updraft, fleeing from a predator, etc.
Its genus "Melanocetus" literally means "black sea monster", a name that is not surprising with these images.

Meet caulophryne polynema, aka the hairy fanfin!
So, contrary to just being the fabric of nightmares, these guys are a part of the family Caulophrynidae, fanfins. They live in the Atlantic and the eastern Pacific ocean, on depths from 900 to 1250ish meters.
As some of you might have guessed, they are a species of anglerfish, witch means that on the "horn" in their forehead there is a small "bulb" attached witch can be illuminated, luring prey to come closer.
Also, the female is much larger than the male. How about 10 times the size!? The female average size is about 15ish cm, and the male is about 1,5 cm
