Thinking about my somewhat chaotic youth and young adulthood, with less than desired self control (and compassion).
How did I learn...? What was I taught directly, and what did I pick up subconsciously?
Honestly, I don't feel like I was taught any proper socialising skills. And I am not blaming anyone, just pondering. But I feel, looking back, that some support in communication, emotional regulation and mutuality could have gone a long way...

“Proper socializing skills” is an interesting phrase. What if the “proper” way is the way that works for you? We are all wired differently, with our own operating systems, so why should the same approaches work for us all? Like you, I grew up around a lot of adults that were my parents’ friends, as well as the kids at school, but I felt that neither were my “tribe”. I developed a hybrid way of socializing based on observations of not only how they interacted with me, but also each other. I eventually grew to the point where I was comfortable with the fact that I WAS different. Not better or worse, just different. I enjoy time interacting with people, but I enjoy my time alone just as much.

The detention center, known as #DelaneyHall, went into lockdown after dozens of law enforcement ofcls responded to reports of a disturbance inside the facility on Thurs evening….
A group of #immigrants inside the facility seemed to mount a revolt on Thurs following days of #unrest over the quality & timeliness of meals, the lawyers & relatives who spoke to the detainees over the phone said in interviews.
“People were #hungry & got very angry & started to react & started to rebel against what was going on in the #detention center,” said Ellen Whitt, a volunteer who works at #DIRE, an emergency #immigration hotline. A DIRE staff member received a call about 6PM from one detainee, Ms. Whitt said, & “when we were on the phone with him, we could hear screaming & yelling in the background.”
The detainee said that people were trying to break windows & that, at one point, guards seemed to have abandoned their posts….
A law enforcement ofcl familiar w/the details of the escape said that the missing men appeared to have exited through an unhinged piece of exterior siding.
Masked officers carrying plastic handcuffs & pepper spray could be seen entering the facility just after 7PM, & people standing nearby reported smelling a pungent odor.
…On Friday morning, officials at the #detention facility told #immigration lawyers with clients at #DelaneyHall that phone calls & visits had been suspended, said Karla Ostolaza, the managing director of the immigration practice at Bronx Defenders. The lawyers were told they should check back next week.
“We have no idea what is happening with our clients right now,” Ms. Ostolaza said.
Mustafa Cetin, a lawyer who has been representing a Turkish man working toward citizenship, said he got an email from the facility at 7:37 a.m. on Friday notifying him that “all movement,” including meetings with lawyers, had been canceled “until further notice.”
Mr. Cetin’s client had been detained about two weeks ago after a routine court appearance in Newark.

McIver, who has maintained her innocence, is scheduled to be arraigned on Mon & has said she will enter a not-guilty plea.
private prison companies have a nasty habit (I've posted about them before) of cramming as many inmates as humanly possible into their facilities, regardless of the max capacity, and the government, (ie their only client) does nothing to discourage this*, in fact the whole system is skewed to maximize profits. Recreational and exercise facilities are preempted for housing. There's no guarantee that possessions are safe because you are literally living in a gym with another hundred people. It's not rehabilitation, it's dehumanizing abuse.
* A big discouragement would be to only pay for the number of people under the capacity... And penalize for exceeding.
