So you know, there's always kayfabe going on, but Democrats aren't in on the joke -- Republicans would just as soon put them against the wall.
Which brings us to the second big problem of the Trump regime, which many white Americans are still slow to realize: they're the enemy, too.
Authoritarians can't enact their draconian fantasies, even against a small minority group, without massive collateral damage to everyone else, especially when it perceives them as potential ideological enemies.
One of the goals of Trump's BBB (aka the MAGA Murder Bill) is to turn the entire country into a border enforcement zone and expand militarized police state shit into every blue state and major city.
This has been true of red state anti-abortion efforts for some time now. Americans are used to enjoying frictionless interstate travel, and white Americans have been largely immune from law enforcement scrutiny. They want to end that. Everyone will be suspect, tracked, surveilled, and at risk.

House of Commons speaker has kept almost 300 gifts over past four years — The Guardian
Lindsay Hoyle’s freebies include champagne, whisky, food hampers, skincare sets and presents for his petsapple.news
As a civil servant I was not permitted to keep more than £25 in gifts and never from anyone wanting a contract or to influence me. But civil servants were held to higher standards.
Strict rules on freebies, no Christmas parties in work time (and paid for ourselves), etc.
I knew one who was sacked for going work in a second evening job, when off sick for a couple of days from the civil service job. Another for posting a racist joke.
We could empty half the House with those rules?
