Until this morning's walk, I'd never seen a coyote up close. Neither had our German Shepherd, apparently, who clearly could have caught the coyote if she wanted to. Instead she seemed to nip at its heels between barks for nearly half a mile before it ducked into a hole between a huge rock formation. When I finally caught up w/ her, I was relieved to find she hadn't tried to go in but was just barking her head off outside. Also relieved there were no other coyotes around to even the fight.
I haven't been that scared since we encountered a huge black bear and she chased it straight up a tree.

I'll be out and about later today, and honestly? I resent the hell out of it.
The vast majority of my adult life, any political action I've had to take has been in service of cleaning up the messes of Republican voters and lawmakers.
I know democracy requires maintenance, but fucking hell I'm tired of being on clean up crew while hearing "Oh, I didn't vote for *this*!" The fuck you didn't.
I'm just so damn angry.
I'm not an "in the streets" person. It's so far outside my comfort zone it's not even funny.
But here we are.

in reply to BrianKrebs • • •We have coyotes on our property, but they usually only come out at night. If we see one during the day. Generally it's sick. Except, the eclipse. That was weird. It got darker and darker, and then the coyotes started to come up the path.
Now I'd seen them before out back. But I never seen them walk up the path before. I was a little scared myself. We have no dogs, so there wasn't any craziness. I would assume there would have been had we had dogs in the house.

in reply to BrianKrebs • • •My experience in SF Bay area - A single coyote is not a big deal, they will avoid medium size (50+ lbs), dog with owner, too risky. The problem is coyotes often run in small packs of 2-4 and one coyote lures the dog out and the other coyotes surround the dog and kill it. Has happened quite a few times here. Many of my fellow hikers have lost dogs or made trips to the vet as a result.
Small dogs are snacks and will be eaten and should not be off leash and even the backyard is a risk. Neighbor's smaller dog was killed last year when a coyote jumped the fence.
Now your bear encounter - that is scary.
Tom Bortels
in reply to BrianKrebs • • •So your dog has run after potentially dangerous wild animals twice?
For her own safety - she needs a leash until you can train her to reliably heel in an exciting situation, and you're willing to bet her life on that training. The coyote wasn't super dangerous - but the bear very much was.
I'm sorry - I hate telling anyone what to do with their pet, but this isn't for your sake, it's for hers.
