One of my kids wants to see if there is any truth in the old phrase that #Norwich has a #church for every week and a #pub for every day…
They are keen to see the churches, I’m more curious about the pubs!
Ecclesiastical architecture won today…must have looked at 15 places of worship in the space of an hour and a half! Most were shut or used for different purposes…that’s been the case for decades. I don’t feel sad, because I’m not religious - but churches are part of our city street scene.
A yet at large suspect shot two Minnesota state lawmakers along with their spouses.
The suspect killed Rep Melissa Hortman and her husband. He shot Sen. John Hoffman and his wife—they are hospitalized.
It appears the suspect is dressed to impersonate law enforcement. My deepest condolences to the families who lost loved ones.
Y’all please be safe out there today. Travel in groups and have a plan to meet up at an agreed upon time and place.

Today, a Democratically Elected Official was assassinated.
But it did not end there, because another one within moments of each other, experienced an attempted assassinated.
Shit here is fucking bad. Donald Trump is responsible, because that asshole keeps telling everyone that we have enemies within. And meanwhile, we have assholes, who want to downplay everything. Fuck you.
Your civil rights are under attack. That's not a catchphrase or a slogan, but a fact.
But so are your human rights, they're under attack too.
And the people attacking them run the government. No one is going to come and save us, because the checks and balances you want to tell me we have, run on people - just people - not fucking magic. And if those people want to screw you over, checks and balances is nothing but a catchy catchphrase without substance.
I cannot stress this enough...
Democracy is an ideal concept, and like any idea, it can be killed with another idea and that is what we are seeing in America!
You should be worried.

When at protests today, please wear an n95 mask! It helps protect you and others from airborne viruses (yes! That is still a risk outdoors!) including covid, measles, and flu!
We don't want people needlessly ill or dead, we need you and your voice!
Yes, I went to an ICE protest Monday night and there was a speaker at the event representing the disabled community. She was begging us to make protests accessible to people with disabilities by masking. I do it for that, and because I don't want to relapse with long Covid.
Folks, don't get long Covid, it really sucks!

Juggling With Eggs
in reply to Juggling With Eggs • • •To my untrained eye, one medieval church looks much like the next I have to confess…I like details like clocks, sundials and round towers that differentiate them!
But the oddest church we came across was St Mary the Less on Queen St. It’s bricked up and virtually walled in on all sides. But it has an intriguing link back to the #Strangers - the #Dutch people who came to #Norwich because of their weaving skills and gave us the city’s emblem - the canary!
Today we found Stranger’s gate open…

in reply to Juggling With Eggs • • •It's definitely an eccentric church. I visited in 2010 and got a tour from the owner. At the time it was a very dusty, privately owned Dutch study centre, and the church was in need of repair.
If you're curious / want to visit, you probably get a response from the owner if you post a hand-written letter under the door!

Intriguing! When you say ‘Dutch study centre’…I came across this account:
‘When I first visited here in the mid-1990s, the church had just been sold by the same trust which, amazingly, had been formed in 1832 to convey ownership of the lease to the Swedenborgians. The building was bought by a curious organisation which proclaimed itself the Dutch and Flemish studies centre’

in reply to Juggling With Eggs • • •That's right, though the "organisation" is (or was) really just one person. He was very friendly, and I now remember I was hoping to organise Dutch language classes in the church. That never happened, partly because communicating via pen and paper was rather awkward!
The photos are from 2010.

Thanks for sharing the photos! The handwritten quirkiness of all the signs now totally makes sense. Did you manage to get the Dutch language classes take off elsewhere in Norwich?
Rob O'Hare
in reply to Juggling With Eggs • • •No, unfortunately not. This was after Norfolk Adult Education had scrapped a Dutch for Beginners course I had organised. There were a handful of learners who wanted to continue but it didn't work out.
I think the Merchant House nowadays has informal language meetups for people learning French and German. Something like that would have been perfect.
Juggling With Eggs
in reply to Rob O'Hare • • •@rohare
That’s a real shame. I don’t understand why Norwich doesn’t do more to encourage Dutch connections and language learning given our history and the fact that Dutch is apparently one of the closest and easiest languages to learn if you speak English.
