Hot take:
Bot non-violent AND violent protests have roles to play in forcing authoritarians to release power. Because protests become violent the moment they threaten power. They send in the goon squad to start busting heads, and suddenly your choices are:
Run
Fight
Use an Item (throw a brick)
Sure, you should give people options for what you intend to be strictly non-violent protests. Some people won't put their bodies on the line if they know it's likely to get violent police response and will simply stay home instead. But so long as the "non-violent" protests that show up in approved places and times and politely disperse when instructed are the only protests, they're painted as "the extremists". You need people who are more extreme and scary to get the non-violent leaders to the bargaining table.
Holy shit.
Helicopter live showing the #NoKings protest in #LA from the air. There's a huge huge huge crowd... then over a couple blocks there's another huge crowd, and down the other way there's another and another...
Edit: Reporter (for I think it's channel 7?) just said he estimates there is at least 100,000 people.

More aerial views from #LA #NoKings protest.
They're spreading out and keep moving. Earlier, Pershing Square was packed, now it's empty. Everytime there's crowds moving toward the freeway but they go over. No attempts to go into it that I've seen.
I'm waiting for #Seattle. Last I saw they were at Cal Anderson prepping to march.

#PortlandME #NoKings rally was quite peaceful. Saw a lot of familiar faces from other rallies. Only one cop car, who was mostly there to direct traffic. Folks began dispersing around 1:15pm, and kept their signs up for the tourists downtown!

Do you feel ready for a career in car thievery now?
I had to hack my own car to make a new key for it, that was kinda fun and interesting too. Also scary how a bit of learning on the internet enables you to become a car thief if you wanted to.

Nearby friends brought me some broken strimmers, a box of parts and a dead mower.
Got both strimmer engines running, one needs new fuel lines (and a new bottom), the other was missing the tank but a matching one was in the parts box. Needs a new tank plug and probably some carb cleanup.
The mower is an old Husqvarna. Black oil in the engine, 2-stroke mix in the tank (derp), a carbed up spark plug and an incorrectly attached and jammed throttle. All fixed, fresh oil, bit of cleanup, works well.
This is a really good old mower, and lightweight. Shall keep and sell our other one.
I'll fix one of the strimmers and maybe stick a new head on it. You can get all kinds of strimmer heads on Ali, pole saws, hedge trimmers, etc.
