It is so nice how the #pandemicpond is maturing now. This is its 5th summer! Can't believe it. The bog filter has made a massive difference for the water clarity and keeping down the algae. The first pic below is from this time last year and you can see the algae clouding and sliming everything.

Two years ago I started planting some moss around rocks in the stream and it has filled in really nicely and naturally. It also served to trap seeds I think and grass and other "weeds" but I like that it just looks more and more like a normal stream. We even have a marsh marigold at the top of the stream (last pic) that we did not plant that came from one that was in the top pond and was eaten by deer. 🦌

A picture from last year shows the top pond with flat stones ringing it. It is in the sunshine and the water is cloudy green. The bottom is not visible in the deep. There is a fish swimming in the shallows. A large hosta is growing just out of the picture, but spreading its leaves over the pond. There are lots of Lilly pads, big and small pink, purple and green.
View of the pond this morning shows the host is gone. It got eaten by a deer. But the water is clear and the lily pads are still there. There is a large waterfall spilling out of a blue tub. There's a light is dappled with shade from the tree as though shines through.
A view of the bottom portion of the stream and bottom pond shows the moss in the stream growing amongst small granite holders along the edge is cedar wood chips before getting into larger bushes around the pond. The bottom pond is quite full of Lilly hats and has two large leafy plants on one side.
Looking at the full length of the stream from the top in the foreground, you can see the stream coming in to some rocks surrounded by large plants on one side and a small Marygold growing out of the rocks on the other.

I went to a Shabbat service this morning at a wealthy suburban Conservative Jewish synagogue to celebrate a friends' daughter's bat mitzvah.
The rabbi started his sermon with several minutes of praise for the fact that #Israel had just started a war with #Iran.
The best part, according to the rabbi, was that the IDF's preemptive offensive strikes had, miraculously, harmed only their intended targets. According to him, there were no civilian casualties whatsoever. A Friday the 13th miracle!

Oh, I forgot to mention that after the offensively Israel-apologist sermon, this congregation ended their morning service by singing the Israel national anthem "Hatikvah".
Again: you don't get to criticize Israel's detractors for equating being Jewish with supporting Israel if you, the Jews, make supporting Israel literally part of your religious liturgy.

This morning I finally found the courage to send a letter about this experience to the rabbi who gave this appalling sermon. I've published the letter here: blog.kamens.us/2025/06/16/a-le…
I sent a copy of it to the synagogue's other rabbi because I'm fairly certain she doesn't share her colleague's views, and perhaps knowing he's receiving letters like this will give her some support for doing something about them.

I am pretty sure Thor used the 15th of his 9 lives this week. It’s been a rough one for him (and us) but he’s doing better today. He’s 19, diabetic, deaf and now apparently has kidney disease. We’re now trying to prioritize quality over quantity of life for him. Today, I brought his favorite toy (a stuffed can of white claw) to him where he was laying and then went to my bedroom. A few minutes later, I hear him howling and getting closer. He walks up to me, looks up, and drops the toy in front of me.

Send happy thoughts to my buddy, please.

Good turnout for #NoKings in Burleson, TX. We estimated 450. Which is more than I expected. We'd had 350 at the Hands Off event in early April, then only ~100 at the 2nd on Easter weekend. But now 450, so that's a good trend. Of course, I wanted there to be a thousand, but this was good.
My updated "NO MORE KINGS!" sign with Schoolhouse Rock characters. I've covered the HANDS OFF logo with a graphic from the SOS made by the Venezuelan detainees and an invert "distress" US flag.
