Here are some things that annoy the shit out of me when it comes to how we study/try to understand software teams, because I am trying to work on my book and I need to clear these out of my head and decide whether they're valuable or just complaints

- something I have taken to calling "factor madness." Papers that are just big dumps of "themes" identified across either a body of lit or from lists generated by participants which are proposed as coherent factors to explain, or cause, something (often productivity). These overwhelming lists of factors typically contain constructs that could arguably be combined and are filtered entirely through the pre-existing language that practitioners have to work with.

This isn't construct development.

in reply to Dr. Cat Hicks

Are you referring to Q-Method here? I've got mixed feelings about this because it LOOKS objective (because numbers) but you can get wildly different groupings across primary factors, and in the end it's the research team that builds a story around the archetypes identified by the factors.

Is it real? Is it measurable? Is it reproducible? I dont know.

But it IS useful (in my opinion) to put up a handful of archetypes for developers and then start to drill down into what we need to measure to help those developers feel better at work.

There are of course some things that help a large class of humans feel better at work, but why do some developers thrive while others merely cope IN THE SAME environment?

I have no idea but I'll bet it's complicated.
