Politics is decision-making in groups
Government are social organizations that make and enforce rules.
The first thing to be said about politics is an old friend of mine. Tarley remarked many decades ago is politics rises when there are three or more people because because then you have to deal with people’s perceptions and their decisions to ally or contest.
But his definition of government also includes corporations. They are organizations that make and enforce rules governing people’s lives in that organization.
In some ways, this project is meant to open up how people think about the world they live in, particularly about how their lives are structured socially.
But it’s his definition of left and right, which goes straight back to the original context the terms were coined in, and how he simplifies left and right down to equality versus hierarchy.
Left and right are defined in terms of those fighting for equality of decision making or those fighting for hierarchy.
He is defining left and right as a specific analytical scalpel rather than being the product of his historical artifact since the French revolution.
He goes into that process as well, which is also enlightening
