Open question for hams and GMRS folks...
I've got an Icom FR4000-3 GMRS repeater, a fairly high end quality bit of kit. Is it worth my time to get a GMRS license and set it up? There are no GMRS repeaters in my geographic area. I'm not sure I'd find any use myself for GMRS, but the license is cheap.
Or do I modify it to work in ham bands? This is more my area, but there are several UHF repeaters in the area, so there is no great need.

in reply to W6KME • • •My answer is: yes, except your location (and mine) probably suck. The main benefit would be the folks here who cannot or do not have a ham radio license who would like a way to communicate in a disaster....
But we'd have to wire those folks in and control the repeater, of course. Some of the GMRS repeaters in the LA area are the wild west, too.

The question is if we're small enough of a community or organized enough to make it work, and if people are willing to learn how to use a radio (even GMRS) in their interest... had a discussion about that this weekend with some folks, and there's great reluctance to "learn something else" even with disasters/emergencies.
