The experience which came to my mind upon reading your story was from a few years ago when I had ordered a new internet connection over fiber. I got zero connectivity. When I plugged in the Ethernet cable my computer would detect link being present and start sending router solicitation messages. But no response was ever received.
Their technician claimed the reason I received no response was that my computer had never sent any router solicitation messages. I had packet captures showing the router solicitation messages being sent. And I knew the interface on my computer was working, because if I connected the same interface to a different internet connection it would receive responses to its router solicitation messages.
Presented with those facts the technician asked if my computer was the one with mac address (so and so). He correctly read out the MAC address of my computer which I confirmed, and then he again insisted that my compute
