While 5 activists are being deported, the Adalah Justice Project says Chris and another activist, Hatem from Tunisia, are still detained. They are in overcrowded cells, with poor ventilation and no AC despite extreme summer heat, and their sleeping areas are infested with bedbugs.

They are confined in closed rooms all day, without fresh air or space to move.

@jbaggs I'm not deep enough into it to know who is handling what. I know agencies do their own when incidents happen, but I don't know if they are shared broadly. Will see if anyone here chimes in, lots more people a lot more involved professionally.

"AI doesn't go on strike. It doesn't ask for a pay raise...These things that you don't have to deal with as a CEO."

in reply to Lili Saintcrow

AI, for those that pay for it, is currently priced at about one tenth to one quarter of what the AI companies need to make an operating profit, and that's not counting their insane and ongoing capex spending.
AI absolutely will ask for a pay raise, and soon, and it will be huge. That agent that's currently costing you half the wage of a junior developer is about to become a senior or principal, but will still make mistakes you wouldn't tolerate from an intern.
in reply to Lili Saintcrow

CEO is surprisingly unaware of how VC funding works.

They are going to ask for a pay rise, and they'll have you locked in.

in reply to Ariadne Conill 🐰

many distributions do not include berkeley db 6.x because of its AGPL license, but berkeley db 5.x (the last one under sleepycat license) is no longer maintained
in reply to Ariadne Conill 🐰

*distributions* don't? what? what's wrong with the AGPL for distros?
This entry was edited (3 weeks ago)
in reply to David Gerard

@davidgerard correct. distributions continue to ship berkeley db 5.x. AGPL is not acceptable for libraries in distros because it makes anything which links to libdb AGPL.
in reply to Ariadne Conill 🐰

@davidgerard there are some exceptions of course, but at least as far as mainstream distros go, we're all shipping db5.3 still
in reply to David Gerard

@davidgerard My understanding is that the old (Sleepycat) license doesn’t allow forking.
Some software (e.g. Postfix) can use the last really-Berkeley db (1.85) which is unencumbered but anything that needs later features is screwed.
in reply to David Gerard

@davidgerard I have not examined the issue myself in detail and am not qualified for legal analysis. I base my understanding on the assertions some years ago of others who I trust who have such a capacity. It had to do with the dual license conditions, IIRC.
What software other than BDB are you aware of using the Sleepycat license?
in reply to 🆘Bill Cole 🇺🇦

i don't know of any such software, I just see the FSF and OSI both have it listed as free/open respectively, which I'm pretty sure they wouldn't do if it restricted forking.
This entry was edited (3 weeks ago)
in reply to David Gerard

@davidgerard @grumpybozo the relevant part is "with or without modification" - so that explicitly supports forking.

Of course as usual that is likely to run into the usual myths and fantasies people have about the mixing and "changing" of licences.

in reply to Ariadne Conill 🐰

the lack of maintenance is a problem, because libdb is basically *everywhere* which means the right CVE in libdb could easily be the next Log4Shell
in reply to Ariadne Conill 🐰

the fact that libdb is *everywhere* is why distributions generally are stuck shipping db5.3 still instead of newer versions. doing otherwise would effectively make major system components effectively AGPL.
in reply to Ariadne Conill 🐰

anyway, the situation with berkeley db is unsustainable. we need to replace it, but a replacement needs to be API-compatible so that we can just drop it in.
in reply to Ariadne Conill 🐰

what should be done is a wrapper around some other performant database library, probably something like LMDB or similar. i'm not picky: the point is to provide the API layer. performance is not the largest concern for most apps using libdb.
in reply to Ariadne Conill 🐰

I used bdb and I remember the API being relatively simplistic… this might not be so tall a challenge.
