Vim has a rough learning curve, where you have to learn a lot of keyboard mappings to even use it. This works out because I use Vim many hours per day every day, so the initial investment makes sense.

But for other random apps, the same philosophy don't work out. I use a PDF viewer which I use twice a week. I zoom once a week. I rotate once ever two months. Investing time in learning obscure mappings never pays off. Give a little toolbar with basic actions. In the style of Windows 95 apps.

or key mappings that are consistent between applications -- this way even if you use a particular app rarely, you still use the key commands often enough to learn them
in reply to ɗ𐐩ʃƕρʋ

@deshipu Right, like applications that scroll with j/k, or initiate search with slash. That works nicely, but if you have other actions which don't map to anything obvious in Vim (e.g.: connect/disconnect/trust), the paradigm starts falling apart.

Phone app that auto blocks any phone number not in your contacts or ones you've called before.
in reply to CatSalad🐈🥗 (D.Burch)

I’d love one that blocks all calls from the same area code that aren’t in my contacts. I don’t live in that area code anymore, so calls from there are either people I know or junk calls.

Trump says Jeffrey Epstein 'stole' Virginia Giuffre from him when she worked at Mar-a-Lago spa

She was one of the most prominent Epstein abuse survivors, led the charge for his arrest, and died by suicide a few months ago. It is reported that she was 17 years old at the time she was working at Trump's Spa when Epstein "stole" her.

in reply to Lauren Weinstein

Virginia Giuffre had said she had a summer job as a towel attendant at Mar a Lago. It was there this Ghislaine Maxwell approached her. Ghislaine brought up the the massage training book Virginia was reading, and asked if she was willing to come to Jeffrey's home to give one.

Trump lied in 2019, saying he kicked Jeffrey out of Mar-a-Lago for making a pass at a member's daughter.

I believe Virginia Giuffre - RIP.

Seriously, I don't think you can understand the present moment without recognizing that huge numbers of people, especially older people, just flat out refuse to change their minds in the face of evidence or moral issues and are willing to lose elections, kill democracy, and destroy the planet so they don't have to change or deal with it in any way.
in reply to Nowhere Girl

I have no evidence to refute the claim that it’s “esp” old folks who won’t change. But my experience says that “opinionated, inflexible, asshole” is not limited to any generation. Gender, maybe, but not age. I am in my 8th decade. Yes some of us are such a-holes as mentioned. Some might know better but fear change. But some can see the need for change is more important than our fears. Call it legacy; we must leave a better world somehow.

If we are at languages. I've heard a story from a person studying in - then - Leningrad (now: St. Petersburg), that toilets in non-posh restaurants are marked as м - мужчина (man) and ж - женщина (woman). But in post restaurant are marked as м - мадамы (madams) and ж - жентльмены (gentlemen).

Now I wonder if the person telling me that was pulling my leg, or the spelling has changed since this time. As the current spelling is джентльмены.

Tried a new coffee shop. Was good all around but not like exciting. Then someone was a dick to one of the cashiers and the way the place handled it has made me a fan.

manager saw and intervened, tried to deescalate but did not capitulate; guy flew off the handle, manager politely asked him to leave 1/3

Awesome scene. As someone else said, I'd live it if the tattoo guy wasn't the owner, just standing up for them.

Reminds me of a scene from the Jack Reacher books. It was in the Tom Cruise film, but it was better in the book. Bunch of 'Bros' picking on a girl and he defends her. There's 5 of them, one of him and he puts them all in hospital. 🤣

in reply to calcifer

Wow. So much wow on this. It's rare enough that managers stick up for their employees, but for the owner to willingly say don't come back and tell your friends is just... amazing... I guess standards still exist out there somewhere after all.

One thing none of the businesses without standards don't seem to realize is when they allow such people to create a hostile environment, that too can cost them customers. They're so afraid of losing a few short term sales they forget that long term exists too. It sounds like maybe the owner gets this though...
