From my perspective it was a group of people, who mostly fished and eventually had control over those waters and their coasts.
In the book “Atlas of Medieval Europe” by Angus Constam, there’s a map of early Christian monasteries, which includes in the key “Egyptian-style monasteries” from Tabenna in southern Roman Kemet to as far north as Roman Britain.
