official sales photo #1, front profile on white background “This outstanding and rare brooch, of exceptional quality and construction, was made in Czechoslovakia in the late 1930s or early 1940s. This brooch is constructed from gilded metal and features an elegant motif showing a bird in flight. It is detailed with individually hand set baguette cut and round rhinestones in varying shades of blue. There is a round ruby red rhinestone representing the bird's eye. All of the stones are multi-faceted and claw set. The brooch fastens using a traditional safety catch and the pin is fitted to the brooch with a round hinge. The pin is stamped 'CZECHOSLOVAKIA'.”

In 1987 USSOCOM sent me from Tampa to DC to do some coordination with our satellite office in the Pentagon. The Eastern shuttle got in at night and the drill was to check into a hotel and take the Metro to the Pentagon in the morning. Which I did. Riding the escalator up from the Metro station I realized the woman a few steps above me was Fawn Hill. My brush with fame.

Oliver North's brother John (Jack?), an Army major, worked for USCENTCOM, the other joint command at MacDill AFB in Tampa. A lot of the special operators I worked with at USSOCOM knew him, and Oliver too. Oliver had the same job Alexander Vindman had a few decades later, and if you've ever been around these NSC guys and girls you know they're shining stars, going places. Usually.
