Every fifty years, the small village of Liberton took a day to celebrate the first time anyone had seen Gregory without his trademark hat. It never seemed to bother anyone that Gregory was always present for each iteration of the celebration, but then, they were all too drunk to be bothered anyway. To his credit, Gregory was always willing to aanswer the villagers' banal questions about the amorphous creature in his crystalline skull.

I'd like to write a script that can look at a file name like 'route_2025-09-16_8.55am.gpx' read the date and then set the date created/modified to the date of the file...

I'm guessing something like that might already exist though.

this I would do in python. Chat gpt would get you 95-100% if you know python already. I personal would use chatgpt.

It may exist already. But configuring a tool that can do this is going to be just as hard as writing it in a general purpose language such as python or bash. So why use a new tool?

in reply to poleguy looking for lost tools

@poleguy I will not use ChatGPT and do all I can to avoid using AI tools.

I would rather struggle (and learn) for days digging into how to best do it and walk away knowing exactly what the code is doing because I created it.

in reply to Pete Prodoehl 🍕

Notice, I didn't say _you_ should use ChatGPT. I already know how to do it in python with no chat gpt.

I'm still happy to help. I don't think you're asking for direct help though, or you would have asked for it, right?

But I'm also happy to share what I know and my experience.

Parsing the date in a filename or inside a file is no easier/harder, so long as the format is consistent. I'd use the internal date/time not because it is easier, but because it won't break when renamed.

in reply to poleguy looking for lost tools

@poleguy Ah, I read "Chat gpt would get you 95-100%" as you suggesting that I use ChatGPT...

I'll write up some code in Python to do the job. Shouldn't be too difficult.

in reply to Pete Prodoehl 🍕

No. I know you are learning python. I agree that the exercise of not using chat gpt can aid in the learning process. You'll end up looking up various libraries, options and approaches and making numerous mistakes, all of which will be helpful long term.
in reply to Pete Prodoehl 🍕

Oh, weird... I thought I had saw you post something about just starting with python.

You might have been using it longer than I have. Ha!

I felt I got into it pretty late... but I don't recall how long ago I actually started... maybe 2015?

in reply to poleguy looking for lost tools

@poleguy Dive into Python came out about 20 years ago, and that's probably when I first started to dabble, but didn't get too far. I ran Python code & applications other people wrote, but barely wrote my own.

I think 2019 was my first "time to sit down and really learn Python!" experience. I had been using it (lightly) at work for a few years at that point, but not too deeply.

As often is the case, there's a blog post:

#python

in reply to Pete Prodoehl 🍕

Just read your post.

It's funny that I never ran into the problem of something like "import random" pulling in ./random.py instead of the library I wanted.

It does seem really like a brain-dead design choice...

and the fact that your editor caught this indicates how bad the problem is.

python's handling of relative paths and imports and scripting is an abomination.

When I just tried it on the command line it happily imported itself recursively with the hi-jinks you'd expect.

in reply to Pete Prodoehl 🍕

I just searched in my exo-brain (my personal notes database) and see evidence that I may not have made my change using python after-all.

Also, I was going the other way: I was taking the date of the file and writing it in to the meta-data.

I can't find my actual script, but saw this in my notes:

exiftool "-CreateDate=2020:12:25 22:39:00" filename.jpg

in reply to poleguy looking for lost tools

I'd be happy to provide you a starting point in your language of choice if you don't have this solved by tomorrow. 😀
in reply to poleguy looking for lost tools

@poleguy In thinking a bit about it (instead of running to ChatGPT to solve my problems) I realized each file contains the date/time like this:

<time>2025-09-24T19:46:52Z</time>

So parsing that should be much easier than parsing weird filenames like:

A low-cost, paid subscription would be a way to pay for hosting in a country of your choosing plus have some cash for you, too. But you may be stuck with WordPress as a platform if you go that route – if you want to publish a blog.

But if you want to do an email newsletter, you might look into Tuta mail plus a payment link for subscriptions.

It's doable for sure, but I don't know that there's a single perfect (as in, one platform doing it all) solution.

(Ghost has a decent reputation. They're in Singapore, but they don't have a free starter plan.)

in reply to Stacey Cornelius 🇨🇦

@StaceyCornelius

That's actually cool. Tuta is a name I've come across a couple of times recently, and with the third recommendation rolling in, I think I'm going to look at them for my email going forward anyway.

Thanks for the ideas! 😀
