Any country in which all the practices described above have been reduced to the blind veneration of a national symbol, especially the flag, and that symbol is intrusively and permanently displayed everywhere for no good reason - smothering all diversity of public expression - has an ultra-nationalist problem. The stiflingly monocultural atmosphere is deliberate, and is always a portent of rising fascism, no matter which country we look at or which flag is flying.

Councillors who've announced that local authorities have a legal duty to remove some of the flags - not because they're British but because their presence raises public safety concerns - have received death threats and even been told they should be raped. This is not everyday "patriotism" but something far uglier.

in reply to The Sleight Doctor 🃏 • • •To be honest, I have not time for "patriotism". It is nothing more than a euphemism for nationalism, made acceptable by appearing milder. Same poison, though.
To be human matters, not lines on maps. Culture is to be respected, accommodated, and allowed to evolve, not defended as if only one group has "got it right". A flag may have valid use as an identifier, never as a rallying point.
We've even had St George flags put up in Wales, FFS.
So, let's burn all flags.

Even here in England it shows a lack of respect to the other three nations in the union. No-one cares if, say, the World Cup is on and people want to root for the England team. Wave that thing all you like! But if the only excuse is, um, it's Thursday? At the very least, if you really must be a flag-shagging tit for no reason, make it a Union Jack. 🙄
