I think the original Flash was higher resolution and quality? I recall the shops looking very believable at the time.
I don't know though. It required a lot more time, effort, and work, but I think that this level of gatekeeping didn't really make anything safer. There were still always those willing to go through the effort and there have been shopped images fooling people since, well, image editors.

A friend in a record shop recommended an album of his, an incendiary 2023’s solo bowed bass record called vilevilevilevilevilevile.
