マリウス . A Word on Omarchy

"Omarchy feels like a project created by a Linux newcomer, utterly captivated by all the cool things that Linux can do, but lacking the architectural knowledge to get the basics right, and the experience to give each tool a thoughtful review. Instead of carefully selecting software and ensuring that everything works as promised, the approach seems to be more about throwing everything that somehow looks cool into a pile. There’s no attention to sensible defaults, no real quality control, and ce..."

An irony about Omarchy - supposedly omakase (i.e. someone else's curation) applied to Arch - is that this is the concept that makes me really like an immutable distro like Bazzite: A bunch of chefs have put a bunch of thought into serving me an OS that does what I want and I don't have to worry about it. And as far as I can tell Bazzite is leaps and bounds more thoughtful. @links
in reply to Les Orchard

Maybe I'll grow out of it, but I remain completely smitten with Omarchy and am unimpressed with his complaints, so 😛 😆

Also: "A fresh installation of Arch Linux, or any of its established derivatives like Manjaro, is by no means more complicated or time-consuming than Omarchy" is almost comically not the point, and wrong.

in reply to Jack Baty

I think the bits that got me were how so much of it is just a bunch of bash scripts lashed together that break in bad & hard-to-recover ways - especially the "migrations". Maybe that's overblown, but it doesn't seem great
in reply to Les Orchard

also weird to keep seeing people discuss it purely on technical/etc merits instead of “it’s created by a proud white supremacist dickhole”
in reply to Jeff Forcier

That's kind of the double whammy of this thing - it's created by a dickhole and it's not even very good :blobSmileSweating:

there is value in criticizing something because of its engineering quality. Too many "it's fascist" arguments and they start falling on deaf ears.
