ChatGPT's Atlas: The Browser That's Anti-Web - Anil Dash

"OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, released their own browser called Atlas, and it actually is something new: the first browser that actively fights against the web. Let's talk about what that means, and what dangers there are from an anti-web browser made by an AI company — one that probably needs a warning label when you install it."

I just keep thinking - who's asking for this stuff? Some of this current era of gen AI is really very useful. But so much of it reads like "we bought all this peanut butter so everything is peanut butter flavored now" press releases aimed at investors, fully ignoring how many folks are allergic to peanuts. It's really frustrating to me as someone who likes making computers do handy things. Really feels like "only the metrics care" gets more true over time

@anildash didn’t have to crap on Zork lovers so hard. That wasn’t a failure of syntax parsing, it was a puzzle! And interactive fiction was very popular 😀

Terra Field reshared this.

Yeah, pedantically: Zork and Infocom were popular in particular because they had a parser that upgraded from rigid "TAKE ROCK" to more natural things like "open mail box, take leaflet, then read it" in their parser.

But still, even Zork wasn't perfect and Infocom were really pushing the limits. Kind of exception-proves-rule territory. "trying to guess what to type to make something happen is a terrible and exhausting user interface" - still a good point, IMO

I think the reason they did it is because if they don’t eventually Google will crush them because the AI in their browser is so convenient and “good enough.” They need to at least try to get there first and find the secret to combining web and AI.

Making WiFi Sound Like Dial-Up Internet | Hackaday

"Dial-up modems had a distinctive sound when connecting, with the glittering, screeching song becoming a familiar melody to those jumping online in the early days of the Internet. Modern digital connections don’t really have an analog to this, by virtue of being entirely digital. And yet, [Nick Bild] decided to make WiFi audible in a pleasing tribute to the modems of yore."

There's part of me who knows this would be annoying as heck to have around, but still I'm tempted to build something like this :blobsweats:

Invitación Clase Abierta Coop.UTNBA\ - Miércoles 29/10 19hs

Evento Presencial

¡Hola!
