Here is an alt-text description for the image:

The image is a tweet with a picture of a woman in an athletic jersey holding a shoe filled with greenery. The text above the image reads "My fat ass thought she was holding a giant sandwich." The woman in the picture is fair-skinned with brown hair pulled back in a ponytail. She is wearing a white jersey with blue accents and the FIFA World Cup logo on the sleeve. She is holding a light pink running shoe filled with what appears to be grass or moss. The background shows green grass and blurred stadium seating. Below the image is the tweet of Brian Schmid, [@]SchmanthonyP, “It took like thirty seconds to see anything but sandwich.”

Glitch is an unofficial customised version of Mastodon with extra features added, such as rich text formatting and making it easier to have higher character limits.

A lot of the features on Mastodon were originally created by Glitch Mastodon and then copied over to the official version of Mastodon.

Because Mastodon and Glitch Mastodon are both free open source software, they can use and contribute to each other's code like this.

Two Transgender Girls, Six Federal Agencies. How Trump Is Trying to Pressure Maine Into Obedience.

Maine said it wouldn’t break state law to follow President Donald Trump’s order barring transgender girls from playing girls’ sports. Then came a barrage of investigations and threats targeting the state’s federal funding.

If you haven’t been following Trump’s effort to destroy law firms that represent clients and causes he dislikes, read his latest executive order in the area, seeking to destroy Perkins Coie, a fine firm. whitehouse.gov/presidential-ac… This should be getting more attention from journalists. cc: @samlitzinger @dangillmor
in reply to Heidi Li Feldman

This is maybe the most nakedly fascist one yet. The entire rationale seems to be that they represent clients he doesn't approve of, casting not only his political opponents as being inherent threats to national security, but also the the lawyers who represent them in court. So democrats aren't entitled to lawyers now?
in reply to Matt Blaze

Worth noting as well that Marc Elias was a Perkins Coie litigator before taking on the work he's done for so long at Democracy on the Docket.
in reply to Mike Olson

Does Perkins Cole have a criminal defense practice? If so, this also would seem to directly implicate the 6A rights of their (current and potential) clients.
in reply to Matt Blaze

Civil litigation for sure (handled patent trolls and related for us). Class action stuff for sure. I don't see a criminal practice among search results.
in reply to Matt Blaze

@mattblaze They do, and they make the 6th A argument in the complaint they filed against the order today - which I’m reading now. @mikeolson @samlitzinger @dangillmor

BREAKING: Perkins Coie sues the Trump administration, seeks TRO, over last week's executive order targeting the law firm — which I wrote about over the weekend at Law Dork (lawdork.com/p/trump-tests-out-…). As was reported Monday, Williams & Connolly is representing Perkins Coie in the litigation.

“Helicopters should be barred from a four-mile stretch over the Potomac River when flights are landing on Reagan National Airport’s Runway 33, National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said in a briefing today as the NTSB released its preliminary report on the mid-air collision in January.”

cnn.com/us/live-news/dc-plane-…

in reply to Laffy

Sounds like they advocate making the temporary restriction put in place after the crash permanent, except only for runway 33 (it current bans helicopters when any DCA runway is in use). Makes sense.
in reply to Matt Blaze

@mattblaze Maybe this is obvious to someone who knows aviation (I don’t), but I’m not seeing anything outlining how heli’s are going to know when runway 33 is in use? Is this just one more thing for air traffic controllers to have to keep track of? How often is runway 33 NOT in use? Why qualify the restriction, instead of just barring heli traffic there as the default?
in reply to CrazyDogLadysezBreatheWithMe

@heartofcoyote everything is heavily controlled by the DCA tower in that airspace. Either the helicopters wouldn’t be authorized for the route when 33 is in use or they’d hold landings on 33 until the helicopters are out of the area.
in reply to Matt Blaze

@heartofcoyote (33 is mostly a secondary runway at DCA, generally used either to accommodate heavy traffic along with runway 01, or during relatively unusual weather.)
in reply to Matt Blaze

@heartofcoyote The restriction actually makes it *easier* for the controllers, since they won't have to watch as as carefully for imminent conflicts between planes on approach to 33 and helicopters flying on "route 4" (the helicopter path along that stretch of the Potomac.

These flight paths (in DC) aren't like roads in the sense that you can just fly on them when you think it's safe. Every movement has to be authorized by ATC.

in reply to Matt Blaze

@mattblaze Thank you! I really appreciate you taking the time to explain. 🙏 Very interesting and good to know.
in reply to Matt Blaze

(The other DCA runways don't have approaches that overlap the helicopter path along the Potomac the way runway 33 does)

Hey new people, you don't have to use the official Mastodon app! There are lots of other options you can use such as third party apps etc. Most people who try these alternatives usually prefer them.

Mastodon doesn't impose any particular app on you. You're free to use your account in whatever way works best for you. Here is a guide to all your options:

➡️ fedi.tips/which-apps-can-i-use…

If you want to compare apps, you can be logged in with the same account on many apps at once.

Okay, after *years* of over-hype about AI, does the DeepSeek moment and the deflation of the AI bubble mean we can finally be normal about AI and treat it like any other tech, evaluating it on its pros and cons, and its actual utility? @johnzajac I'm not sure this is really true? Training can be relatively power-intensive, though this varies a lot. Usage is increasingly not that power-intensive, especially when efficient caching is in place, and overall the average consumer's impact is roughly in line with other activities that we don't generally critique, like video encoding or high-res video streaming. I agree with you about consent on content, but again... same issue with streaming content on (e.g.) YouTube.
@John
in reply to Anil Dash

not yet. We need something like OpenAI to crash and burn first - the hype men have to move on before we can really talk.
