Even aside from not being allowed to spend budgets, engineers who understand the technical issues with a project aren't often allowed to have input into how those issues are prioritized.

All software is the realization of someone else's mental model. Since it's never your own (even if you wrote it, it was you last week or last month or last year), operating under that model requires learning it. However, software should embrace and facilitate that learning, rather than treating it like a chore to be avoided.

@owen oh i mean. i think there are some kinds of software that work like the thing i'm describing in this thread ("i shouldn't have to think, it should just conform to my intuition") and sometimes it works like you're describing ("models are powerful, the user should learn the model"). Maybe there's a synthesis where the software is "self-teaching", the user adopts a mental model without knowing it. Maybe that's what you were trying to say. I am spitballing here not attempting to produce Theory
I keep telling people that writing documentation is often the best way to realise an API/tool you’ve designed makes no sense or could be significantly improved with small changes that you never realise until you describe it. Also best results are when you do this after not touching the project for a month

AI cannot develop software for you, but that's not going to stop people from trying to make it happen anyway. And that is going to turn all of the easy software development problems into hard problems.
I've been doing exactly that with society itself. I've figured out a way to change the mechanics of how money is valued so that it works for each one of us and strips power from billionaires. The systems to make this happen already exist, we just haven't used them together yet and that's what I'm working on. It's a true game changer that levels the playing field for every demographic and can erase institutional discrimination
@ashwin @tess @owen In my opinion, git is worse than every vcs I have used except sccs. I don't even rate git above "Make lots of copies of a single directory". But I don't want to have this conversation because when this conversation starts I just start yelling
I have used, and in many cases, installed, configured and administered:
SCCS, CVS, RCS, Perforce, ClearCase, Subversion, and git.
Believe me, git is the best we have yet.
There are plenty of simple front-ends available for git, and also IDE / editor integrations to make life easier for developers.
I do agree that nerds will sometimes overengineer things, to rule through obscurantism. There are sometimes too many ways to shoot yourself in the foot.
Yet, just saying "git doesn't work" is not too helpful. When pointing out a problem, it's advisable to be as specific as possible about what doesn't work for you, and how you would like it to work.

The mercurial ux issues are real but i think you can remove them if you toss a sensible default .hgrc file in ~ and avoid running four specific commands (mostly thinking here of the broken/vestigial "branch" and "phases" features). I don't hold these flaws against hg because it failed so utterly at market it doesn't matter
I would like to write a mercurial tutorial someday about bypassing the UX problems but i've spent the last ~10 years being very distracted.
@ashwin @tess I was a regular Mercurial user for _years_ before Git sucked the air out of that room, for example. Mercurial has its own UX issues - I could write essays, plural, about the revision selection mini-language, for example - but the basic workflow commands required a lot less knowledge of hg internals than Git's workflow commands do.
@ashwin @tess Git is aggressively snapshot-based and not diff-based. The only diffs Git stores are as a form of compression for storing snapshots, and are based on similarity (minimial diff size) rather than the history-based semantics you might expect.

I might suggest spending a year or so learning at least one or two other command-line SCM tools, to be honest. Being a command-line tool is not automatically an invitation to poor UX.
I spent a long time being intensely frustrated with the hg developers over phases, for solving a non-problem in the most abstruse way possible.
I have come around. I think they were right, ultimately, even if the way they went about designing and implementing phases pulled a lot of attention away from other areas that needed work.
@owen All I know is if a project I was participating in asked me to make use of the "phases" feature, I would say no.
I have several frustrations with the hg core devs, who I at one time tried to submit patches to and was unhelpfully rebuffed. Of main concern to me is that subrepos and hg-git, to me the two most useful and important features of hg, are considered "features of last resort" and therefore I assume any attempt to submit a bug related to them will be replied to with "don't care".
