Glamour Don’ts

I’m old enough to remember the old Glamour Magazine Do and Don’ts (they would put a bar over the subjects eyes to disguise them); it was sort of a Goofus and Gallant situation. Anyway, here is today’s Glamour Don’t (and the bar over ol’ JD must have melted onto him): Some of the replies are cherce, as Spencer Tracey would say.

🧵 I'd like to share some of the recent and ongoing collaborative projects I’m most proud of from my time at NOAA. Some will continue on in one form or another, but others will not - a direct result of the cuts hitting science across the board.

First off, I acknowledge that I am incredibly lucky to have had such supportive mentors that encouraged me to follow my own scientific and cross-disciplinary interests, as broad as they may sometimes be.

As boring as this topic may be and resentful as we may be that this man continues dominating news cycles, it's impossible to avoid either, because the damage is ongoing.

Heather Cox Richardson writes,

"The stock market continued to fall today. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell another 478 points, or 1.14%; the S&P 500 fell almost 0.8%; & the Nasdaq Composite fell almost 0.2%."

It's also important to note what this means for our "democracy" (again, Trump et al aside). Markets work by making things that people spend money on. We "vote with our dollar." If a few people have all the votes, then we'll have lots of lobbyists, corporate lawyers, fancy cars, etc., but constant shortages for things regular people need (childcare, social work, etc.) Markets are antidemocratic, and more so the more inequality there is.
in reply to The Luddite

I'd throw something else into the mix. Fiscal policy is what's tended to help the folks who can't vote with their dollars. Yet fiscal policy is exactly what (a bunch of) the people who can vote with their dollars suppresses. They tend to want lower taxes, less regulation, and less government spending, and they tend to get their way. So, not only is the market arrangement unequal by nature, it has a built-in dynamic that tends to make it become more unequal through time. We tend to get economic recessions when this dynamic reaches such an extreme that the market mechanism itself starts breaking down. Then fiscal policy is kicked back on and the cycle resets. While I don't agree with the details of the analysis in this talk you can see this process depicted visually in a quite vivid way here. Every time we approach and bounce off that wall on the right represents a lot of pain for the folks who are not in that 10%.

Oh shit record store day is soon. Neat. Time to see if anyone I like is releasing anything interesting.
