in reply to Low Quality Facts

It's normally safe to swallow an apple seed, because the coating prevents digestion, so it passes harmlessly through. However, if the seed has been broken open, then you're looking at a swift but painful death.
in reply to Low Quality Facts

The Johnny Appleseed legend has been sanitized beyond recognition. In fact, he was responsible for single-handedly eradicating elephants from North America.

Found some early spring wild onions!

(Notes: these are everywhere around here. We only picked a small handful of bulbs. Generally you'd only snip the leaves and allow the bulb to stay in the ground to keep growing. And you only harvest a small amount amongst a larger crop so that they keep growing year after year.)

in reply to Apiary

@Apiary - Oooh, even better! Means you can just pull up all the bulbs!

"One of the strangest dynamics of modern politics is that the richest man in the world chooses to get his information from grifting ignoramuses on social media."

Anyone with an ounce of intelligence understands that, when making decisions, good information is like intellectual gold dust."

"By contrast, operating on bad information courts disaster. Garbage in, garbage out. ...

In the past, we needed to worry about uninformed voters, those who didn’t know much about politics. These days, we need to worry about the much more dangerous misinformed voters."

"Uninformed voters often recognize the limits of their knowledge and are therefore more hesitant. Misinformed voters are certain they know something they don’t—and they don’t hesitate to act, sometimes aggressively, on those false beliefs."

I thought that my browser extensions were protecting me from most ad-related delays but I just tried nextdns.io on my phone and everything is noticably faster.
I don't know whether it'll eventually cause problems but so far I haven't noticed any new bugs on my usual news sites.
I think it's like PiHole as a service.

Does anybody you know in the FOSS world is involved in some Foundation or Association for a project in Belgium or The Netherlands? I'd love to hear your experience! At @postmarketOS we are looking into starting a legal entity, and we are still pondering pros and cons of different options (gitlab.postmarketos.org/postma…) We already got lots of feedback from German e.V. and a Spanish Foundation is likely a no-go.

'Diogenes received an invitation to dine with one whose house was splendidly furnished, in the highest order and taste, and nothing therein wanting. Diogenes, hawking, and as if about to spit, looked in all directions, and finding nothing adapted thereto, spat right in the face of the master. He, indignant, asked why he did so?

"Because," Diogenes, "I saw nothing so dirty and filthy in all your house. For the walls were covered with pictures..."

Logan Marie Glitterbomb argues that opportunities exist, even under Trump

"Short of working with actual nazis or selling your soul to the devil, work with whoever you can to achieve your political goals and you will see greater success and build greater community bonds while breaking down partisan political barriers.

"I’m not an accelerationist but I’m not sure it would have been any better under Harris and at least with Trump, more people are willing to put in the work to organize."

If you asked me in my 20s if I admired Steve Jobs or Bill Gates I would have scoffed. But, back then I thought there was something there more than luck, privilege and vision ruthlessness. Sure I didn't believe in magical mercurial auteurs, a handful of remarkable individuals who shaped all of human culture and invention.

But, I did think that men in those positions had to be smarter than the average bear. A little more driven. Lucky. And... LOL "good with people."

How cynical I have become!

in reply to myrmepropagandist

it definitely helps to succeed in the computer industry when your mum is friends with the IBM CEO 🤔

So someone in the family was good with people.

in reply to myrmepropagandist

A lot of stage dressing and effort has gone into the institutions, traditions, and stories that focus admiration on the wealthy.

But, I always thought at least some of it was organic, to their own credit. Not all of it, not even most of it, but some.

I really don't know about that at all anymore. There are levels of wealth that now just make me assume people are, well, criminals. Avoid at all costs.

I don't think this shift in perception is personal, I think it's a wider trend.

Had just scanned the last page of a magazine... when the desktop crashed. 300-odd pages.

Rebooted... Simple Scan had autosaved! But it crashed when I scrolled to the end. Never seen it do that before.

Reopened it, told it to export the files. It got to Page 302 before crashing again, which was better than I could have hoped - I only had to rescan 20 pages or so. Phew!

in reply to Ben

there's quite a quick switch in that show when I'm like, oooh Twin Peaks type weirdness and WTAF happened to everything.

I should watch it again =D

I also enjoyed Persons Unknown at roughly the same time, had the same vibes for a bit too, but only sadly lasted one season.
