Weird #3dPrinting question I've been thinking about.
Would the left side print faster? (Assume that both discs in the photo below are the same diameter and height.)
My assumption is that it would. The print head could accelerate during the chunky segments but the right side would be constantly changing directions, so no acceleration.
If it would be measurably faster, I'm not sure. I need to do some testing, but it's interesting to go against years of optimization in the other direction.

So I should trust it because you say so? Who trusts you?
Because, from where I stand, you're just another Internet rando.
Please try to see it from my viewpoint and then find a way to make the trust you demand from me something that is verifiable by me. Perhaps a trusted-by-me third party can speak for you? (I trust @pluralistic, for example.)
Trust is not easily earned and should not be easily given.
(BTW: I still won't click on a link shortener, even so.)
@jackwilliambell Sure, I can't force you to trust me. When did I try to do that?
A URL to a web server I run is a URL to a web server I run. Whether it is a 301 redirect or not, or what length it is, has nothing to do with privacy or trust. An HTTP request is an HTTP request and can be logged by the server.
Here are two direct links to apps I hope people will trust enough to use, but if that is not you, that is okay 😀
"I have no idea what I'm talking about" level question:
So last week I found out how polls work in ActivityPub
github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i…
And… this is interesting. What does this say about the level of anonymity of votes in Mastodon polls? I always assumed at least some of the instance admins would be able to deanonymize votes, but if votes are somehow analagous to statuses does that imply random users could snoop who voted how…?
Multiple-choice polls should allow no-votes · Issue #34041 · mastodon/mastodon
Pitch Mastodon allows multiple-choice polls; e.g., selecting more than one choice is allowed. However, these polls reject an attempt to vote for 0 of the options. In many types of poll, that may be...GitHub
No. Evan's comment describes the inter-server protocol. Other users have no way of accessing these individual votes, on the voting server nor the poll server. Admins with database access can plainly read individual votes on either of the two servers.
PieFed came up with an interesting system last year that scrambles user IDs for votes to anonymize them, so the voting user's server would still know their specific votes, but the poll server would not. This has not yet been added to Mastodon.
mcc reshared this.
So this is almost like Matrix where any room participant can read individual poll answers, even historical ones after a user changes their mind (except here it’s gatekept to only admins, but a random user can just run a single-user instance and become admin)
I feel like somewhere should be a disclaimer that poll answers aren’t really as private as they would seem. Similarly for blocks (Moshidon does say the blocked user sees that they’re blocked but most servers actually hide this)
This is correct. @kimapr If you run a Mastodon server, you have access to (1) all votes for all polls started on your server, and (2) votes by people from your server on polls hosted elsewhere.
I didn't have room for it in my original reply, but it's worth clarifying that there's nothing except a social contract stopping an ActivityPub server from publishing all votes it knows. The whole "private voting" idea in PieFed started because mBin was publishing votes: piefed.social/post/205362

RFK Jr.: It Would Be Better if ‘Everybody Got Measles’
“It used to be, when I were a kid, that everybody got measles. And the measles gave you lifetime protection against measles infection,” he said, then taking a swipe at the vaccine. “The vaccine doesn’t do that. The vaccine is effective for some people for life, but for many people it wanes.” 🤦♂️

"RFK called for everyone to get measles, citing a lie that getting it provides lifetime immunity and that the vaccine does not. In reality, getting measles destroy's the immune system's memory of past infections, rendering one susceptible to other deadly diseases."

Dear Canadians,
I have learned that you can make the federal government mail you tax forms for free.

I have asked for English AND French. I wonder if this counts as malicious compliance.
Get a T1 income tax package - Canada.ca
Each package includes the tax information, the return, related schedules such as schedule 1, provincial and territorial information and related forms.2024 income tax package,www.canada.ca
I'm finally beginning to do my taxes.
So far I've learned that you can only claim medical expenses if you have at least $4275 of income.
Okay, I completed and mailed my taxes today, perhaps just in time for another Canada Post strike.
I included a note for the feds about how I’m doing it on paper this year because way too many “approved” services store Canadians’ personal tax info in the US. (I also circled in red ink the bad translation job on their envelope.)
I had to mail two separate larger-than-normal envelopes, so I slapped two “permanent” stamps on each one and am hoping that works out to $1.94 or whatever the current in-store postage amount is.
Will both packages arrive? Maybe. Are my numbers correct? Maybe. Are my principles and supporting documents correct? I’m confident in my case.

The surface shown in my last few posts can be described as a diagonal on the hypersphere. In this 🧵 I'll expand a bit on what I mean by that.
On a sphere we can trace 'loxodrome' curves of constant bearing, diagonal to the longitude/latitude directions, spiralling from one pole of the sphere to the antipodal one.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhumb_li…
Stereographically projecting from the top pole onto a horizontal plane gives logarithmic spirals, where one of the poles projects to the point at infinity. However, if instead we turn the sphere on its side before projecting we get a family of beautiful double spiral curves which reveal the true symmetrical nature of the 2 poles.
What is the equivalent of these curves in one dimension up?
Instead of the familiar sphere in 3d space a.k.a. the 2-sphere (which can be parameterised with 2 coordinates, longitude and latitude) we now have the 3-sphere or hypersphere in 4d space.
One particularly nice way of parameterising the 3-sphere is using Hopf coordinates (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3-sphere…).
Stereographic projection which maps the 2-sphere to the flat plane can also be generalised to higher dimensions, and it conformally maps the 3-sphere to our familiar Euclidean 3d space.
This projects Hopf coordinates to a triply orthogonal system composed of spheres, planes and nested tori. At one extreme the torus becomes a horizontal circle and at the other a vertical line (or circle through infinity) through its centre (see toroidal coordinates here mathcurve.com/surfaces.gb/trip…).

in reply to Kyle Davis • • •I doubt it. The larger the facets the larger the included angle and the more it needs to slow down between facets.
It's not just segment length, it's the angle between the segments.
The details depend on what firmware you are running. In Marlin, this is directly set as "junction deviation" and in klipper it's set with
square_corner_velocity
. from which the junction deviation is derived.Don't fight your years of optimization making better parts. ☺

in reply to Michael K Johnson • • •Here is the Klipper issue that covers Grbl and Smoothieware and why the setting is different in Klipper.
Marlin's junction deviation documentation is lighter in detail. I do remember configuring that by trial and error until prints looked OK to me back before I moved to Klipper.

in reply to Chris Huck • • •@chrishuck right. I think I’ve met this problem.
When you have two different geometries joining with different with a different number of facets you get some pretty strange problems. The corners can’t quite align. In a 3d print? Not a problem. I can see in industrial applications it could be a big ass problem if it wasn’t just an artifact of an image quality setting.
(I actually like the look of lower facets in some more shiny filaments like this example)
Chris Huck
in reply to Kyle Davis • • •Fortunately, it’s just a graphical artifact. When it happens, I usually just turn up the quality setting from the default until it looks right. We’re not talking complex geometry here, usually just cylinders.
I never really thought about it on the printing side because I’ve been using STEP files for so long in slicers and also running my G-code through ArcWelder to produce true circular moves. It could definitely be a problem otherwise!
