I find it interesting what is happening to the polls in Canada.
What looked like an upcoming comfortable victory for The Conservatives has changed dramatically after the inauguration of Trump.
Should the Liberals end up winning the election later this year, the US president would be facing the new leader of the Liberal Party, Mark Carney.
We would then see the chaos president Trump fighting a trade war against a calculated, educated and experienced economist who has lead central banks.
This happens all the time.
French fries are not French, theyβre Belgian at best.
One of the most popular Chinese dishes in the USA is General Tso's Chicken. In China no one knows who the General Tso is and never tasted his Chicken.
This is not an exhausting list.
reminds me of the dutch "filet americain"
which 1) for whatever reason has a french name
and 2) is literally raw minced beef with some spices that you're supposed to put on a slice of bread (with maybe some onions/eggs/more spices).
I guess maybe because americans like meat and boneless things? I have no idea what the connection is here honestly

Floorp is what I recommend to people, who insist on sticking with Firefox.
As you pointed out, the obvious, if Firefox goes, so will all these many Firefox clones, because none of them have expressed interest in hard-forking Firefox, and going independent.
But, Floorp has two advantages.
1) They do not break things. LibreWolf, will break something (often), then blame Firefox. Which only further hurts, Firefox, which in turn only hurts, LibreWolf. -- It is a snake eating its tail. I think the 1x Floorp broke something, they patched it right away, and they owned up to their issue. They did not try to pass the blame, as LibreWolf does.
2) Floorp is very similar to Vivaldi Browser. If Firefox, goes, it would be nice not to have a big learning curve, if you need to switch browsers. If you've learned Floorp, you've more or less learned, Vivaldi, in many ways.
These are two things, I believe can help users in the long run.

Weird #3dPrinting question I've been thinking about.
Would the left side print faster? (Assume that both discs in the photo below are the same diameter and height.)
My assumption is that it would. The print head could accelerate during the chunky segments but the right side would be constantly changing directions, so no acceleration.
If it would be measurably faster, I'm not sure. I need to do some testing, but it's interesting to go against years of optimization in the other direction.
@chrishuck right. I think Iβve met this problem.
When you have two different geometries joining with different with a different number of facets you get some pretty strange problems. The corners canβt quite align. In a 3d print? Not a problem. I can see in industrial applications it could be a big ass problem if it wasnβt just an artifact of an image quality setting.
(I actually like the look of lower facets in some more shiny filaments like this example)
Fortunately, itβs just a graphical artifact. When it happens, I usually just turn up the quality setting from the default until it looks right. Weβre not talking complex geometry here, usually just cylinders.
I never really thought about it on the printing side because Iβve been using STEP files for so long in slicers and also running my G-code through ArcWelder to produce true circular moves. It could definitely be a problem otherwise!

And⦠this is interesting. What does this say about the level of anonymity of votes in Mastodon polls? I always assumed at least some of the instance admins would be able to deanonymize votes, but if votes are somehow analagous to statuses does that imply random users could snoop who voted how

No. Evan's comment describes the inter-server protocol. Other users have no way of accessing these individual votes, on the voting server nor the poll server. Admins with database access can plainly read individual votes on either of the two servers.
PieFed came up with an interesting system last year that scrambles user IDs for votes to anonymize them, so the voting user's server would still know their specific votes, but the poll server would not. This has not yet been added to Mastodon.
mcc reshared this.
So this is almost like Matrix where any room participant can read individual poll answers, even historical ones after a user changes their mind (except here itβs gatekept to only admins, but a random user can just run a single-user instance and become admin)
I feel like somewhere should be a disclaimer that poll answers arenβt really as private as they would seem. Similarly for blocks (Moshidon does say the blocked user sees that theyβre blocked but most servers actually hide this)
This is correct. @kimapr If you run a Mastodon server, you have access to (1) all votes for all polls started on your server, and (2) votes by people from your server on polls hosted elsewhere.
I didn't have room for it in my original reply, but it's worth clarifying that there's nothing except a social contract stopping an ActivityPub server from publishing all votes it knows. The whole "private voting" idea in PieFed started because mBin was publishing votes: piefed.social/post/205362

The Liberals on the other hand have kept their heads down and have been busy running things, basically ceding the floor to Poilievre and his grievance-politics.
Additionally, the Liberal government under Trudeau have been in power for almost a decade, so people got just kind of bored with them.

It's pretty rare that governments last longer than two full terms (10 years max, but generally closer to 8). Trudeau was leader for 9 and a bit. That would make him the 6th or 7th longest serving PM.
He had a lot of baggage from a few relatively minor scandals and dealing with Covid. There was also a constant anti-Trudeau drumbeat from Western and mostly rural based grievance operations, well funded by the oil, gas and coal industries.
PP made it his duty to appeal to the anti-vax and grievance voters. A lot of the rest were just leaning "not-Trudeau". As soon as Trudeau stepped down, conservative support started to slide.
