"Over the weekend of 15-16 March, a team of FlightGear developers travelled to Lelystad Airport (EHLE) in the Netherlands to represent FlightGear at the annual international FlightSimWeekend. Over the course of two days, the Aviodrome aviation museum welcomed over 4500 visitors, ranging from young families to seasoned flightsim veterans. Many visitors tried out one of our setups for a first-hand experience of open source flying."

Did you know that the "fiercely independent pro-Europe" news site euronews.com is 97% owned by a VC firm run by a close friend of Hungary's Viktor Orbรกn?

That the the International Federation of Journalists called for a European parliamentary inquiry into the Euronews manipulation of the 2024 European Parliament election?

That aforementioned VC firm was fined for facilitating money laundering and financing of extremist organizations?

Be very wary of @euronews.

The Pebble smartwatch team shares all of the ways Apple prevents other smartwatches from doing the same thing that Apple Watch does.

Your smartwatch canโ€™t send texts, respond to notifications or talk to iOS apps unless itโ€™s an Apple Watch. No one is allowed to build a device that connects to an iPhone as well as an Apple device.

What did Unilever think they were buying when they bought Ben & Jerry's?

@clolsonus I'd be interested to see the project, if you did it! (Been thinking of doing something similar-ish for my own drone work, when I get back to it).

Here is an example of something I did in the past ... I figured out the camera calibration of my action cam (runcam) and correlated the video motion with the flight data to align the two in time, and then used opencv to draw overlays in post process (could never keep up in real time.) But now I'm imaginging something in 3d, but in real time ... maybe not with a camera feed though. youtube.com/watch?v=hLo0UBuq3wโ€ฆ

I fucking hate what the internet has become. The vast majority of the evils that come from the net come from large centralised organisations, and in response they pass laws that are trivial for large centralised organisations to comply with, and crippling for small groups. It's mandatory centralisation.

This is great news not in the least for our American friends where the weather service is being sabotaged. Weather models are oddly enough always global - you can't predict the weather in Berlin a week ahead without also predicting the weather in Austin, Texas. ECMWF has excellent hurricane forecasts also for the US for that reason, and these are also being used in the US already. Wonderful stuff: ecmwf.int/en/about/media-centrโ€ฆ

Huge thanks to guest contributor Dave Drodge for submitting the 'Try AI' skill tree, a new template you can use to gauge your progress and get ideas on trying out Artificial Intelligence tools. Inspired by video game skill trees, just colour in the boxes of anything you've already done to identify skill gaps and get inspired to try new things.

Meet Amir, Amir is a vampire, he's very old, roughly 500 years, he can't remember exactly when he was born. He takes special herbal teas so he can be out in the daylight. His favourite colour is purple and he has his own style, he doesn't care that people find him odd or excentric.
He's handsewn from thrifted materials and old clothes.

The @wikimediafoundation will switch traffic between its data centers today (19 March) at around 14:00 UTC.
This is done twice a year to make sure that #Wikipedia and the other #Wikimedia wikis can stay online even after a disaster.

You will be able to read, but not edit, all wikis for a short period of time.

More info: meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tech/Sโ€ฆ

So both wikimedia 'Application' datacenters (eqiad & codfw) are in the USA (all the others are caching).
Are there any plans to diversify that?

EU Politicians Make Push For Radio Free Europe Funding After Trump Cuts - rferl.org/a/czech-eu-rfe-fundiโ€ฆ this is a triply good idea: good for RFE, good for EU, and good for listeners
in reply to Glyn Moody

radio remains important because it bypasses artificial walls put up by govts, penetrates across areas during disasters, works when the Internet is crippled by any outage. It also reaches rural areas where listeners are not on the Internet. Always good to have it ready, rather than try to re-establish it with urgency later on.
