UK leader says #Russia cannot veto how #Ukraine defends itself as western military officials meet to draft security plans - theguardian.com/world/2025/mar… "allied forces would be deployed to support Ukrainian troops, including by sea and air, rather than replacing them."

Even as evidence emerges of potentially grave errors in their vetting process, the Trump admin appears ready to argue -they can use the Alien Enemies Act to enter the home of any person they allege is a member of Tren de Aragua, W/O A WARRANT.

Experts say such an interpretation would infringe on basic civil liberties -raise the potential for misuse. Warrantless entries: some precedent in wartime history -not in peacetime.

Anthropic shipped a new "web search" feature for their Claude consumer apps today, here are my notes - it's frustrating that they don't share details on whether the underlying index is their own or run by a partner simonwillison.net/2025/Mar/20/…
in reply to Simon Willison

Wouldn't it be awesome to have this working on top of an open search engine index like Marginalia?

marginalia.nu

I believe behind it is still just one person with servers in their basement but we can dream after all.

in reply to Simon Willison

It's using Brave as the search index, they quietly updated their "Trust Center" and added Brave Search as a subprocessor

I'm surprised Brave is allowed to resyndicate their Bing search results like this.

This sounds a lot like Brave's practice where end users are mules to evade site controls of Brave's standard-defiant crawler: lobste.rs/s/iopw1d/what_s_up_w…

It's amusing to tell the kids about how there was a time where a 10 or even 15MB hard drive was a big, honking unit that sat in a washing machine sized drive and could probably be filled by about 3 to 5 toots like this one.
in reply to The 500 Hats of LambdaCalculus

Had two CDC drives similar to that, connected to a DEC Vax 11/750 at my first job.

You could measure how heavily used the Vax was by how long it took the empty cannister to vibrate itself off the top of the drive and onto the floor due to the heads shuddering back and forth. 7 days = light load, 1 day = busy

unfortunately, many hunters vote for the neo-Francoist, xenophobic and pro-Trump party VOX, which defends hunting and bullfighting. And yes! it's a shame but not all Spaniards are that stupid

I've been pushing my fundraiser, but I wanna share the incredible supplies we've been given already.

From: @alpenglow, @sjpiper145 and @clomads . Also tools from @flashingjanet (who's made LED outfits for Gaga and Daft Punk, among other things).

Legends. Look them up.

Notice these are all women & queers, who did this *without me asking*, taking immense labor off of me.

Of course. I'm unsurprised, joyful, but I often cry about the complexity.

I’ll repeat — if the goal ISN’T to specifically and deliberately weaken and isolate the United States as quickly as possible, how would a plan to do that look any different than what they are doing?

A welcome dose of optimism, via @jlpiraux:

❝Either way, this shows that Musk isn’t really the wealthiest man on the planet. A single dose of optimistic reality and his entire empire comes crumbling down. The emperor has no clothes. Do you see why he is distracting you? Why he looks so frantic? Musk is terrified of reality because it means the end for him.❞ wallonie-bruxelles.social/@jlp…

Folks who still don’t quite understand #TeslaTakedown, who are saying “I hate Elon too, but how does this hurt him?!?” and are still mostly just clutching pearls about acts of petty vandalism and missing the movement: you need to read that article.
This entry was edited (6 months ago)
in reply to Paul Cantrell

Tucked in that optimistic article, though, is this humdinger of pessimism:

❝Some investors see Musk as a point of control, not a point of profit, so they are happy to back him even if it loses them huge piles of money.❞

It’s low key, but when you think through the implications, it’s one of the grimmest sentences you’re going to read in this sea of grim sentences.

in reply to Paul Cantrell

I have been reflecting on a role outlined by Machiavelli after a recent and insecure conquest.

The role is a wrecker of opposition whose abuses serve a conqueror's purposes, but who may be disavowed, scapegoated, expropriated, or severely punished once the work is accomplished, to make the conqueror look like a savior.

in reply to Paul Cantrell

I see people are gravitating toward that kernel of pessimism — and believe me, I understand! — but please don’t lose the forest for the trees here, don’t miss the article’s core point:

If Musk doesn’t exist, if you just look at the fundamentals, Tesla is wildly, wildly overvalued, by a factor of…8x? 16x? should be bankrupt already, maybe? And if Musk is in fact toxic, a millstone around the company’s neck instead of a galaxy-brained magical unicorn, well….

The point of #TeslaTakedown isn’t to bring down an otherwise successful company; it’s to knock down a house of cards.

This entry was edited (6 months ago)
in reply to Paul Cantrell

the desperate overvaluation going on this week by various analysts suggests they are very aware they're in a bad position. Absolute nonsense that some of them are still saying 550 - if it can't hold 450 even when Musk is Trump's right-hand man there's no way it can go higher. They're desperately trying to find mugs to sell the stock to.
in reply to Paul Cantrell

and the Musk house of cards is propping up the Trump House of cards. They've put themselves in a dangerous situation because they've both grifted themselves into a corner where their only options are take over the country or go to jail.

#TeslaTakedown is more important than Occupy and more accessable. #Debillionaritization it's commencing

I almost want to do a stunt sale, buy a share at whatever the current price is, then immediately sell it at maybe $200 less, effectively spending $200 to push the price down. (AFAIK you can’t do that with an ordinary brokerage account, but you can do it if you sell directly and file the paperwork after, which I’m not going to take the time to learn how to do - tho I might spend $200 on some of the shorting ETFs)

The flip side of that interpretation is that some of those investors could theoretically suffer massive, massive losses trying to hold onto that point of control, vastly limiting their ability to continue that path with others in the future, at least hopefully

There's add on 'endpoint protection' systems that can notice log activity and react automatically, but that's an after the fact reaction by an outside program, not something built in to the kernel as an inescapable trap ready to spring shut the moment it's needed.

(Some of them are open source. The others are expensive enterpriseware. Quality ... varies.)

in reply to Chris Siebenmann

@cks That's my experience as well, that bolted-on endpoint-IDS is usually more vulnerable than a well-configured-but-stock OS and more trouble than it's worth.
