This explains why my circuit wasn’t working. The 74LS595 chips I bought from AliExpress are fake. A quick rub down with some IPA and the printing lifted straight off.

Rest of the day was mostly feeding branches to #HerrSchröder. The woodchips completed a little garden path but the larger share went into the mud pit in front of the garden, which is a right mess now after the concrete removal.

Some ancient hay from the barn floor on top of that and blended it all in with the rotavator. The idea is that this will improve the gloopy soil there and allow it to drain better. Tomorrow I want to compact it.

JULY 2025 FRIENDS OF THE SHELTER FOR TRANSGENDER PEOPLE CAMPAIGN The Center T Shelter in Yerevan is once again on the brink of closure. Unfortunately, after the Trump administration’s decision to shut down USAID programs, our organization lost a significant portion of its previous funding. This has made our work much more difficult and put large-scale projects — like the shelter in Armenia — at serious risk. Once again, we need your help. By the end of this month, we need to raise €1,460. This money will go toward rent, utility bills, food, and medicine for our residents. The situation has become so critical that, in an effort to save funds, we’ve had to cut the shelter team’s salaries this month. Your donations cover rent for a three-room apartment (shelter capacity is up to 6 people at a time), utilities, household chemicals, basic food and medicine for those who are unable to afford those costs. I’m halfway to agreeing with this piece by @rbreich. Reich’s argument in short:

- Federal courts are pretty consistently smacking down the Trump admin.

- For all the bluster about ignoring the courts, for all the delays, the Trump admin •is• still ultimately complying with them.

- There are clear signal from the Murdoch-y oligarch world that Trump will lose them if he starts defying the courts.

(It’s worth reading the whole thing.)

Here’s why I’m only •halfway• to agreeing with @rbreich:

If you squint at what Justice Roberts said, if you squint at those WSJ editorials Reich linked to, one way of reading them is: “Hey, Trump, don’t defy the federal courts, because ••the SCOTUS will take care of it for you••” (ht @heidilifeldman for this analysis).

I think the Roberts court is ready to declare Trump a dictator with only the slimmest fig leaf of legal restraint. And you don’t have to defy the courts if the SCOTUS is going to let you do anything.
