How Elon Musk’s DOGE Cuts Leave a Vacuum That China Can Fill

The Department of Government Efficiency is shuttering organizations that Beijing worried about most, or actively sought to subvert.

I've also been told by drivers that they also enjoy being waved at, sometimes it even makes their day!

A Math Couple Solves a Major Group Theory Problem—After 20 Years of Work - wired.com/story/after-20-years… read this amazing if abstruse achievement of the human mind, then contrast it with #trump's dangerous stupidity

A key problem with Rachel Reeves plan to save £5bn by cutting disability benefits eligibility is that many of those costs will need to be picked up by Councils (who are already in grim budgetary position).

So not only is this a policy penalising the vulnerable to free up money for defence, it will also likely compound local problems while ensuring for many disabled people any (posited) reforms of the system will be way too late to help them.

Its a disgrace!

Where is the extra going to come from Chris, where if we do not make cuts somewhere is the extra money we need to support our NHS our School and other Government departments going to come from.
We know the UKs economy has crashed since Brexit, even if we rejoin the EU tomorrow that extra won't come it yet so, where is the extra coming from?

Do we get into more debt?

in reply to Merry Christmas

@lyndamerry484 We take money from the wealthy, even a tiny percentage would cover most of it and wouldn't need to be taken from the most vulnerable who can ill afford to lose money, there's no reason in a supposedly compassionate society to expect the poor to foot the costs the rich can pay for but avoid. Also, a country that can print its own money cannot run a debt like a household can, that's a strange myth.

@RichardJMurphy sets out to try & understand what POTUS Trump is actually trying to achieve, and (rightly, in my view) settles on a central mission to neuter the institutions of countervailing power (to use J.K.Galbraith's term, not Murphy's) that have dared to try to constrain the billionnaire oligarchs in the past. Key to this is a move to shift what remains of governance functions to the state level to diffuse & weaken any residual power capacities.

She was New England’s first woman elected DA.

As a lawyer, she worked tirelessly for victims of domestic violence and of gender discrimination.

Trump administration’s blockchain plan for USAID is a real head-scratcher
Whatever happens to USAID, it will apparently "leverage blockchain technology."
arstechnica.com/tech-policy/20…
in reply to Ars Technica

People who talk putting stuff “on the blockchain” don’t understand it and have no idea what they’re talking about. Especially this administration.
in reply to Ars Technica

I was taking about this with friends—as much as I admire blockchain’s ledger accountability, it will also hamstring future clandestine efforts that were part of USAID’s soft power, which is much preferable to open warfare in #geopolitics

Yes, I understand the emotion around AI “stealing" artists' content. But you know what will protect your copyrights most effectively *and* keep you in work?

No copyright for AI.

If the capitalists can't own it, they can't replace people who do.

yahoo.com/news/us-appeals-cour…

in reply to Ian Betteridge

This is minimally effective: most commercial generative AI applications aren't artistic. How about no copyright protection AT ALL for trained models or their outputs? And no legal standing or protection from liability for LLM generated text presented as professional advice (eg. legal or medical opinions). The company that supplied the LLM is wholly responsible for damages caused by people taking their output at face value.

God sent a freezing wind for Trump's inauguration. Somehow you wonder why these so-called Christians don't read the signs on the wall.

Last time she did this was for Reagan's second term. Looks like there is a consistent pattern.

Let me tell you about the most wasteful US federal government spending I know about. It's a humdinger. You and everyone you know are mired in it for weeks, or perhaps months, every year. It will cost you, personally, thousands of dollars over your lifetime. I'm talking about filing your taxes.

Was pleased to see they had all the deductions already filled in. If I'd had an expensive commute for work, I'd have been able submit receipts to get a deduction above the standard minimum. Same with any non-electronic transactions I might have had. I don't , so I didn't.
