@brianhonan - If logic prevailed (which is wont why am i even having this thought experiment?), then this would be a short bubble of spending, realizing it doesnt work, then hiring up actual people.

Alright. I'm going to ignore "security" for as long as I can.

While I can alway recommend listening to Roderick on the Line, this episode is particularly good if you’re a musician and especially a guitar player. I was listening on an airplane, and it made me miss my instruments more than usual.

Using AI image generators to create Ghibli style images just shows that you neither respect those pieces of art and their creators as well as not understanding their message of the importance of humanity.

It baffles me how someone can miss the point so utterly.

As with so many aspects of the time we’re living in now, the humanity is totally bypassed to achieve some other goal, be it money, or power.

@futurebird So tell me, she who knows, I've got some bugs coming up in the next section of my series of novellas. What's a good documentary on ant behaviour, possibly bees, for me to steal some cool bits for my alien bugs? My characters will be literally crawling into the nest, so I need a good primer. A lecture recorded at a university might also work.

One thing I like in #CJCherryh's "Serpent's Reach" was the idea that each majat (space ant) was an individual, but each time two majat meet they "take taste", i.e. exchange saliva, which updates their memories to be identical.

Humans kissing might also have roots in food sharing, the way that people used to chew food for babies when weaning them before we got all weird about that process.
in reply to Seiðr

@Illuminatus @cptbutton
The weaning food chewing thing kind of grosses me out. But, it makes so much sense... what are you going to do sitting in a cave? Give a baby a carrot? Invent the food processor?

Probably shouldn't mention birds where the parent feeds the babies by puking into their mouths...

Miyazaki is right. The latest version of OpenAI‘s image generation technology has resulted in a flood of users sharing images on social media that have been transformed in the style of Studio Ghibli, the legendary Japanese animation studio.

Not really.

Did I make one anyway?

Hell yes.

Gathering aerial footage of Gaza is a dangerous task. Bellingcat and our partners at Forbidden Stories/ARIJ/Paper Trail Media/Die Zeit/ Der Standard/ Le Monde/RFI identified several cases where drone journalists were killed or injured shortly after capturing aerial images. Good morning Fedi friends!

I just added a new link to my Mastodon profile: @elena 🤗

How many #ActivityPub profiles do I have now? I don't want to know 😆

Off I go continue writing about #PeerTube for #TheFutureIsFederated (part 2, showing what it's like to use the software from the POV of a creator). I look forward to doing some tests and seeing what it's like to embed PeerTube videos on my website. Article coming tomorrow.

Wishing you all a lovely day!

Wow – didn’t think I’d be in tears today, but this message sent home from Gaia as it was shut down forever today hits hard 😭

What you’re seeing is a map of the 106 CCD detectors that Gaia used to measure the positions of billions of stars in the Milky Way for the past 11 years 🛰️✨

They were turned off in a special sequence … 😕

@pluralistic My condolences — may its memory be a blessing — it had a good life and did amazing work! I’ve been at more than one spacecraft funeral and I know saying that last, remote goodbye is always hard. I’ll never forget watching that final signal spike from Cassini as it tumbled into Saturn, or the stories shared as the MER team said goodbye to Spirit. Even that old xkcd comic was enough to send many team members into tears.

I hope you will have a good wake for your old and dear friend.❤️🛰️

@cyberlyra @pluralistic Yeah, Spirit... a f-ing *robot*, and Randall managed to suspend our disbelief like pressing a button. Make that up if you can

@cyberlyra @martinvermeer @pluralistic Randall also did a brilliant job with a live xkcd stream during the landing of Philae on Comet 67P in 2014.

But then arguably we at ESA did one of the finest ever jobs of anthropomorphising spacecraft & connecting them emotionally with the cartoons & stories about Rosetta & Philae – they still have the power to make me cry.

@binaryphile that’s a fair criticism. I read this as they are not even in the action but cowering around the bend watching so not really “on the grounds”
in reply to J Lam 👩🏻‍💻👩🏻‍🎨

@binaryphile

Agreed. I visually read it as the members of the group chat, most emphatically not the soldiers on the ground, dressed up to cosplay at being soldiers, but still scared, hence clowns. And the reporter invited to the "classified" chat.

Poking fun at the chatters, for not noticing the odd man out in the group.

Since I'm sure this is going to get linked to by HN-loving ignoramuses asking, "Why is jwz so mean to HN?"
