A tiny gray bird with a white chest and stomach, the dark eyed junco comes to Indiana for the winter. It will be leaving for the north and its breeding grounds in a week or two. Usually its departure coincides with the arrival of migrants from the south.
This small yellow and white bird with the black and white wings is a male American goldfinch. He is molting right now and will assume his neon yellow color with his black cap in another month. Meanwhile, he looks patchy.
The titmice have been going nuts around here lately. They are the loudest birds for their size. They fly from feeder to feeder, singing and waving their wings about. This bird stopped for a moment, presumably to catch its breath.
This is how you know it's too dark to take pictures. I saw a small Coopers hawk (probably a male) on the shepherd's hook and pressed the shutter just as it took off. But it was so dark (it was raining) that all I got was blur. Time to put the camera away and do something else.
