in reply to Ulrike Franke

they are congruent when you acknowledge one party is comprised of systems, processes, and competent people all working together to get things right and the other party is a group of incompetent, lying, objectively evil criminals led by a felon with a lifelong history of organised crime based on dishonesty for dishonesty's sake.

in short: the liars are lying and the honest people are telling the truth.

@thygrrr @rmathematicus
Quaternions are here, absolutely, though in some descriptions they won’t be mentioned, but rather SU(2), which is a group made up of the unit quaternions

There are also spherical harmonics bursting out everywhere in the page I linked:

gregegan.net/SCIENCE/Ellipse/E…

That electrons are not like little planets is important, but all the symmetries of the *classical* Kepler problem leave an imprint on the quantum version.

in reply to Greg Egan

- the latest version of my paper has a new section on quaternions (section 4.1):

arxiv.org/abs/2507.11428

This ends with an implicit question, namely how the quaternionic description of the hydrogen atom wavefunction in this section meshes with the quaternionic description at the end of section 6! I decided to put this version of the paper out there and worry about that question later. It involves some calculations that would be more fun to do working with @gregeganSF.

But I already know this: hydrogen atom wavefunctions are the same as functions

ψ: ℍ - {0} → ℍ

that obey the quaternionic analogue of the Cauchy-Riemann equations. Each such function is determined by its restriction to the unit sphere in the quaternions. Restricted to this sphere, we can think of such a function as a spinor field on the sphere, and we can express the hydrogen atom Hamiltonian in terms of the Dirac operator on the sphere.

My #linocut #tiger for #GlobalTigerDay. Habitat loss is a great threat to these great cats. They are endangered after a century of decline and only about 4,500 remain in the wild. The good news is there are signs of an uptick in numbers globally but the need for habitat preservation is urgent.

American democracy promotion is no more.
It was never applied equally, large powers such as China or Saudi Arabia didn’t face much blowback, yet there was a push for democracy & human rights around the world. It’s now gone.

Even assuming Trump is personally innocent, he still has a motive to cut a deal with Maxwell that leads to an eventual pardon. She might name prominent Democrats or other people to whom Trump is hostile.

Her “pattern” suggests she’ll say anything Trump wants her to say.
